We are seeking qualified applicants for teaching and research in the area of High Voltage Technology. The starting date is as soon as possible.

Recognized expertise in more than one of the following areas is expected:

  • New insulation materials for high voltage applications
  • HVDC technology, systems, and grids
  • Novel high voltage switch gear
  • Electric arc analysis and protective measures
  • Technologies for Digital Asset Management for high voltage installations

Competence in additional current topics of high voltage technology is an asset. 

A doctoral degree is required; additionally, Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), an exemplary record of research achievement as an assistant/an associate/a junior professor or university researcher and/or an outstanding career outside academia are highly desirable. Ability in and commitment to teaching are essential. The application should include supporting documents regarding success in teaching. German is not necessary to begin but will be expected as a teaching language within the first 5 years.

Jointly with the Chair “Transmission Grids and Energy Economics” and the Chair “Active Energy Distribution Grids” the professorship will be part of the “Institute of High Voltage Equipment and Grids, Digitalization and Energy Economics”, which will be managed collaboratively by all three professors. The professorship shall continue and extend ongoing activities in the area of high voltage technology.

The topic of energy is widely investigated at RWTH Aachen University, activities in this area will be further expanded. Currently, major challenges arise in the context of energy transition, and in the related requirements for novel technologies. Close collaboration with the other professors in the field of energy technology at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, as well as with RWTH Profile Area “Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering” (ECPE), Forschungscampus “Flexible Electrical Networks” (FEN) will be expected. A contribution to the energy branch of Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA) would be desirable in order to strengthen this link.

The leverage of an interdisciplinary research culture is a main goal of RWTH Aachen University, therefore the willingness to interdisciplinary cooperation across faculty boundaries is required.

Active participation in teaching both at undergraduate and graduate levels is expected, including development of innovative didactic concepts. The application should include a teaching statement including proof of teaching achievements.
