AWE is looking for a Senior Waste Specialist to Act as the AWE Subject Matter expert for the management of Controlled Waste within the Business.

Location - Reading / Basingstoke Area

Salary: £42,000 - £66,400 (dependent on experience)

Ideally, we are looking for candidates with detailed knowledge of UK and European waste legislation, standards and guidelines and those systems that exist to enable industry to comply.

Successful Candidates will be responsible for:

  • Provide Waste Officer training and support maintenance of competent waste officer resource.
  • Deliver inspection programme against processes including (legislation, internal standards, procedures and guidance).
  • Specify the functional requirements and standards to which the Controlled Waste Route and site shall operate.
  • Support the application for relevant Nuclear License Conditions, Environmental Authorisations, Permits, Exemptions or Variations
  • Setting, or support to the setting, of Strategy, Standards, Procedures and Guidance to ensure a consistent interpretation of relevant policies and legislation across AWE.
  • Maintain EPR16 Baseline Roles - Defining Requirements.
  • Drive improvement in the sustainable management of waste.
  • Provide technical direction and definitive advice to AWE on the management of Controlled Waste.
  • Liaise with the ONR, EA and other stakeholders as appropriate for waste related matters.

Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • A recognised degree in Environmental science enhanced by experience or post-graduate qualification; or equivalent combination of relevant qualifications and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of the Environmental Management System and the requirements of ISO 14001.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements appropriate to the job.
  • Experience working in a responsible role within a relevant waste management or waste regulatory field.
  • Apply for EPR exemptions, work within Regulatory position statements, CLAiRE material Management Plans and other necessary permissions and licences for Controlled Waste.
