AWE are currently seeking a Programme Manager, to manage the delivery of our current product programme. Working to the Programme Director, the role encompasses the daily management of the Stockpile (design, manufacture, assembly and transportation of components) and In Service Support Programmes. The direct project value is approximately £50m per annum, with indirect responsibilities for £200m spend per annum. The role task manages approx. 150 engineering staff and line manages 25 Project Managers.

To qualify for the role, the successful candidate will: be able to demonstrate a proven track record in delivering complex engineering and manufacturing projects in highly regulated, challenging environments (not necessarily within the same industry); show clear drive and determination to deliver excellence in all aspects of their work; be adept in working with multiple stakeholders within a matrix organisation; and demonstrate a strong safety and quality culture.

Key tasks, accountabilities and responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the project team, to ensure the project is delivered to meet all objectives and contracted requirements
  • Lead the management of the contract, to maintain a constructive working relationship with key stakeholders in AWE and the Ministry of Defence (MoD), chiefly the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO)
  • Lead and deliver the In Service Support (ISS) programme
  • Lead and deliver the Stockpile Programme
  • Ensure effective management of programme risk and mitigation measures
  • Accountable for financial performance against agreed project budgets
  • Assure project execution in line with AWE and MoD project and commercial delivery processes
  • Work with the Programme Director to ensure the alignment and integration with wider AWE and DNO programmes

Key skills and experience required:

  • Extensive experience in managing major/complex projects with £100m+ budgets
  • Evidence of successfully leading cross-functional teams in a complex matrix organisation
  • Previous experience of implementing and working in a collaborative environment
  • Previous experience in managing a portfolio of projects and the associated project management teams
  • Proven leadership experience, able to integrate and facilitate across organisational boundaries
  • Knowledge and delivery experience of technical in-service support programmes to complex engineering solutions
  • Knowledge and delivery experience within a manufacturing and assembly organisation
  • A clear and concise communication style (oral and written), with the ability to compile reports and present to peers and Senior Leaders, often at short notice
  • Experience in compiling annual budgetary cycles over a 1/4/10 year horizon
  • Relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience in technical delivery programmes
  • Relevant project and programme management qualifications
  • Advanced skills in all MS Office applications, including MS Project
