Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Technician to join UKAEA on a 2-year Fixed Term Contract. Working in an inclusive working environment, at the heart of scientific exploration technology for future energy production, you will have an appropriate qualification in electrical engineering or a related discipline.

As an experienced C&I Technician, you'll be responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of all the electrical, C&I, mechanical and vacuum systems on the High Frequency Pellet Injector (HFPI) as well as the maintenance and updating of all the supporting documentation for the safe operation of the plant, all in accordance with 18th Edition Electrical wiring regulations, whilst ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction.
As a member of the team, you will be required to support all hardware related aspects of the JET data acquisition and electronic systems. You will be responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of all the electrical, C & I, mechanical & electrical systems for a small section within the Heating & Fuelling Department.
What will you be responsible for?
Maintaining the HFPI sub-systems including the electrical, pneumatic, vacuum, cryogenic control and associated diagnostic systems
Preparing safety and plant documentation for the operation of the HFPI
Leading and supervising apprentices ensuring they are operating safely and to the standard and procedures of the UKAEA
Liaising with multi-disciplined end-users (e.g. professional electrical and mechanical engineers and physicists) to help identify possible ways of meeting their C&I requirements then and throughout the product lifecycle
Equipment & hardware are located in operational areas that cannot be accessed during machine operation, which means that fault-finding and remedial work must be planned at short notice and often outside working hours. Some work will be required in Controlled areas (Radiological).
Essential skills, experience and competence required
Experience working with Microsoft suite - Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint
Familiarity with written systems of work (e.g. Risk assessments, Work control, method statements)
18th Edition Electrical wiring regulations
HNC / HND qualification or equivalent in electrical engineering, instrumentation, electronics, or a related discipline
Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions
Good analytical skills
Flexibility and strong behavioural safety awareness
Experience of working in industry with C&I, electrical engineering, SCADA systems, PLCs and electrical drawings
Desirable skills, experience and competence
Ability to apply technical expertise to solving problems and adapt to a variety of requirements and tasks
Experience working with C, C+, Python
Knowledge working with Vacuum and Cryogenic equipment
A good understanding of working in a scientific environment/in controlled environments
The jobholder must work towards accreditation with the IET
