Excellent opportunities to work in a leading science environment offering exceptional employee benefits.

As part of UK Research and Innovation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest research organisations and operates at a number of sites within the UK, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and many more around the world.

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) within STFC is one of the world's leading laser centres, providing scientists mainly from the UK and continental Europe with access to an unparalleled range of pioneering laser technology. CLF has a small manufacturing and assembly team dedicated to delivering the engineering hardware for the CLF's operational program. This is a dynamic, low volume, fast response prototype team skilled to use a range of CNC and manual machines. The team also supports the upgrading of labs and facilities which would include: cooling water, gas, vacuum and cryogenic systems.

About the role

We now have vacancies for qualified and experienced CNC Machinists, responsible for modifying, manufacturing and building bespoke hardware to support the experimental and upgrade programmes across the entire facility.

This is an exciting, challenging, multidisciplinary, hands on role within a small manufacturing and assembly team. You will be producing machined components to a high quality using manual/CNC machines, as well as the assembly of precision components.

About You

A minimum of a BTEC ONC or similar in mechanical engineering and a recognised apprenticeship is expected, with an HNC or HND desirable, but candidates with significant proven experience will also be considered.

To join us you will be experienced in traditional manual and CNC machining, as well as have a good understanding of engineering practices and methods.

Candidates should be able to build precision hardware using conventional hand tools, work from drawings and instruction, and accurately build hardware in areas where physical access is limited.

To be considered for the higher band you should be able to produce high quality components on CNC/manual machines. You will also mentor and supervise other workshop staff.

The role requires the candidate to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be innovative and inquisitive, with a desire to gain new skills in a broad range of areas.

Employee Benefits:

We are offering permanent positions that provide a whole host of family friendly benefits including; 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays), an excellent pension scheme, employee shopping/travel discounts, a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance.

UKRI is an Equal Opportunity & Disability Confident Employer.

To Apply

Applicants are required to include a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role.

The closing date for applications is 7th November 2021.
