Seeing is believing.  And that’s the only way you’ll really get to know about our sophisticated technologies and how we’re using them to fight crime in the capital.  We don’t say much, for obvious reasons, but suffice to say that we’re leading advancements in emerging technologies to deliver bespoke electronic and ICT solutions for operational use by police officers in the field.

Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) are part of Operational Technology Group of Met Operations 3.  We are responsible for keeping the Metropolitan Police Service at the forefront of new and emerging technologies, so our work is highly innovative and no project is ever the same.  Some initiatives involve undertaking research activities with academia or exploring new off-the shelf technologies.  While some projects will involve taking commercially available products and modifying them, others will involve creating a solution from scratch where it does not exist.

Delivery of these solutions involves the complete lifecycle from developing requirements with customers, producing design solutions and turning these designs into a fully functional product or system for operational use.  The Electronic Systems Development (ESD) team develops bespoke electronic solutions to unique business issues relating to some of the more specialist and sensitive parts of the MPS / National policing network.

The Assistant Development Engineer will be part of the ESD team developing niche electronic solutions to unique problems.  You will support the Development Engineers in their tasks of designing, building / prototyping, testing and evaluation.

Under the guidance of a development engineer, you will work in a team of engineers assisting in producing designs and turning these into fully functional products or systems for operational use in the field.  The work will include some design elements, building, prototyping, manufacture, assembly and exhaustively testing items before deployments and providing accurate test reports.

The role is varied and on any typical day you may be involved in a number of activities including assisting with software and hardware development projects, assisting with or carrying out electronics design, testing, participating in project meetings, design reviews / workshops and meeting with customers or suppliers as well as helping with all aspects of the support to the ESD team.  You will also carry out the production of parts including the fabrication of PCBs, cables, assemblies etc. and the sourcing components / equipment where required for assembly into larger systems.

The work will also include assisting in the evaluation, recommendation for purchase and modification of specialist equipment from the marketplace to meet specific business needs.  This will include procurement activities and support to the ESD laboratory, workshop and equipment.

You may also be offered the opportunity to participate in occasional operational or field work alongside operational colleagues and officers.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, which are reviewed and progressed based on merit alone. We are committed to creating a diverse workforce that is representative of the society we serve, regardless of gender and sexual preferences, religion, or disability.

In return for your expertise, we offer a range of benefits. These includes flexible working patterns and a competitive annual leave allowance. More details of these can be found here: https://www.met.police.uk/car/careers/met/police-staff-roles/police-staff-pay-and-benefits/
