Use your outstanding technical and communication skills to help New Zealand's System Operator prepare for a 100% renewable energy future!

Transpower's Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko outlines New Zealand's opportunity to accelerate electrification to help meet climate change and sustainability goals. Significant increases in both grid and local network connected energy resources are expected.

About the team

Our Operations division provides New Zealand's Transmission System Operator service and is involved in working with electricity market participants, transmission and distribution network owners, and asset owners for any energy resource with a capacity greater than 1MW. To continue to have enough capability available to meet the increase in demand for our service we must look to automation and continuous improvement.

The Power System Engineering team specialises in essential power system stability analysis and expert dynamic modelling and tool support. The team undertakes detailed analysis and modelling to ensure we understand how assets perform, and any risk they present, in order to provide the information, tools and advice needed to securely operate the electricity market and power system.

Our full and evolving work programme, including demand for new connections to the Grid, creates an opportunity for Senior Power System Engineers to join our team.

The opportunity

In our offices in either Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington or Christchurch, and working closely with other power system professionals across Transpower you'll explore and prepare the System Operator for the challenges and opportunities that the transition to a 100% renewable electricity system will bring.

Thinking broadly, you'll help us engage with the Electricity Authority www.ea.govt.nz and industry participants to make the required changes to our tools, the market, standards and the Code to enable us to optimally operate the electricity system.

Ours is an evolving, predominately renewable and unique islanded power system with a growing penetration of renewable technology. There is no shortage of challenge and opportunity, knowledge sharing, learning and collaboration cross enterprise.

What experience will you bring?

We are looking for Engineers with seven plus years in time domain simulations and dynamic modelling. You may be working for a Transmission System Operator, Grid Owner or Engineering Consultancy, utilising well-developed communication and influencing skills and an ability to understand, model and analyse generation and complex power systems.

You'll enjoy working both autonomously and as part of a team, with caring knowledgeable peers as you consider the implications to power system operations, system stability and system security.

To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate the following:

  • A Bachelor's degree (Washington Accord) in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering
  • Knowledge and at least seven years' experience with Power System Analysis Tools to support building dynamic power system models, performing load flow and time domain simulations; ideally DSA Tools (TSAT) or DIgSILENT PowerFactory or PSCAD
  • High level, real world analytical skills and outstanding attention to detail
  • You take an enterprise-wide view and have the curiosity to question and look beyond the obvious to seek alternative options and solutions
  • An innate ability to work with and direct other power system engineers though positive influence, to deliver technical projects
