About us

Diamond Light Source is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. Our facility houses the UK’s synchrotron light source, that can produce beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to probe the structure and composition of matter. From viruses and vaccines to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology, it underpins research and innovation for more than 8000 scientists, with over 90 companies already paying for its services.

The development of synchrotron technology proceeds at a relentless pace and so to maintain Diamond as a world leading facility plans for major upgrade are being developed, known as Diamond II. Development of software and computing are a critical part of the upgrade to enable users of the facility to orchestrate increasingly complex scientific experiments, and so take larger and more complex data and to reduce that data such that they elucidate new knowledge.  To archive this requires advances in instrument control, experiment orchestration, data acquisition, data management, automation, and remote access.

About the role

We now have a new opportunity for an experienced software development manager, who can develop and drive the integrated software and computing programme, as part the upgrade of Diamond. This will be realised in close partnership with existing software and computing groups.

You will provide the vision and future strategy to enhance and optimise our centre, working closely with our other IT Leaders and the software and computing groups to understand strategic drivers and tactical needs. You will ensure we can provide technically innovative solutions that meet our organisation requirements with the necessary usability, technical stability, and scalability. You’ll have overall responsibility for planning, acquisition, deployment, and maintenance of state-of-the art software resources.

You will be responsible for leading in the design, development, and implementation of integrated Diamond II software, in close coordination with beamline scientists, Data Analysis, Data Acquisition and Controls groups.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Developing, with the other software group leaders, a medium-term vision for beamline software architecture that meets the needs of the Diamond II user community.
  • Developing and managing the programme of work to deliver core software component for Diamond II
  • Collating, understanding, and communicating core software the requirements for Diamond II software across Diamond, translating these into functional and technical specifications.
  • Providing a technical advisory/support function to Diamond.
  • Planning, designing, coding, testing, deployment, documentation, and support of core software.
  • Providing and managing the delivery of technical and professional knowledge to identify opportunities for technical or process improvement.

About you

You will have a thorough understanding of modern software development in large scale scientific research environment or industry, from both a traditional sense and with regards to modern software architectures as applied to control, data acquisition data analysis including computing and data-intensive research. In addition, an understanding of leading high throughput computing and storage solutions.

You will have strong managerial experience and the ability to deliver inspirational leadership to cross-functional teams, directing change, and software project management.

You will demonstrate knowledge/experience of:

  • Experimental science.
  • Technical software engineering.
  • Gathering software requirements from diverse clients and interests and building coherent lists for their delivery.
  • Modern software project management techniques and tools.
  • Object orientated languages such as Java, C, C++ and Python.

You will hold a first degree in engineering or Science with PhD qualified candidates desirable.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, including the ability to communicate complex information to a ‘non-technical’ audience in an easily comprehensible way.
