Job Details

About us

Dyson develop products which are deliberately different and verifiably better than the competition. These solutions are increasingly complex and require closer and closer integration of traditionally separate engineering disciplines. We're rapidly expanding our product systems engineering team to help us manage and understand that complexity and ultimately get our new ideas to market sooner.

About the role

The role requires a strategic thinker - an ability to look upstream towards early concept development as well as downstream into industrialisation in readiness for the start of production.

Working with and reporting to the Global Head of Product Systems Engineering, the Senior Systems Engineering Manager will strive to transform the ways of working across Research Design & Development (RDD) through true Systems Engineering, while leveraging opportunities to pioneer and progress product platforming.

You will lead a team of product systems engineers who:

  • Work at the core of our early-stage product development teams using systems engineering tools and methods to bring clarity from ambiguity.

  • Translate our product vision into clear and concise requirements - user, product, and business.

  • Use MBSE methods to develop product architectures. Decomposing the problem into digestible functional, physical, and behavioural chunks.

  • Build and coordinate system wide simulations to help us to balance requirements early.

  • Work collaboratively with all our engineering teams to clarify work packages, balance technical trade-offs, and resolve engineering issues.

  • In addition to project responsibility, you will play a critical role in developing, embedding, and recruiting to our systems engineering capability more widely.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Attracting and developing a world class team of systems engineers.

  • Owning and developing business wide capability for systems engineering including ownership of our processes for product architecture and product platforming.

  • Owning and delivering on our roadmap towards full integration of model-based systems engineering - including tool selection and customisation, methods development, and training.

  • Helping us pivot our focus from products to product platforms to maximise reuse of engineering effort spanning all technical disciplines.

  • Providing targeted coaching, mentoring and consultancy to teams and individuals within Systems Engineering and more widely across RDD to enhance their use of systems engineering or resolve specific technical challenges.

About you

  • Responsible - for the leadership, direction, budget, and resourcing of a group of experienced systems engineers working at the earliest stages of our new product developments in all Dyson product categories.

  • Credible - able to lead technical discussions with VPs and at C-level

  • Confident - to operate effectively on ambiguous early-stage projects.

  • Diligent - in ensuring approaches are adopted and world-class processes are followed in every aspect of the Group's activity, from leading team meetings (online and in person) to the efficient management and utilisation of resources.

  • Able to skilfully challenge convention - you don't blindly follow process. You know how to change direction to find novel ways of working and adding real value.

  • Inquisitive - always ask 'why?' rather than looking to others for the answer, seeking to understand the underlying principles behind all engineering problems.

  • Influencing - comfortable presenting complex analyses to senior stakeholders and be able to convince high-functioning technical experts at all levels within Dyson.

  • Communicative - able to articulate complex ideas and concepts verbally or in writing to anyone at any level in Dyson (potentially including Sir James Dyson) in a clear and concise fashion.

  • Collaborative - easily and actively build relationship across functional divides. You proactively seek out and establish mutually beneficial connections.

Ideally, you will possess:

  • Experience of leading and developing small to medium sized teams with the ambition and potential to reach Global Head of Department & beyond

  • Practical, relevant experience in a new product development and or industrialisation environment performing similar roles.

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels from indirect reports to board level with confidence, accuracy, clarity, and appropriate levels of detail.

  • Expertise in the requirements engineering and system architecture.

  • Hands on experience with simulation and systems analysis using tools such as SimScape/Simulink and MATLAB.

  • A solid grasp of MBSE including experience building SysML models using tools like Sparx EA.

  • A good engineering degree (or equivalent, including experience) in a related discipline.

  • Performance related bonus

  • Company paid Life Insurance

  • Discounts on Dyson machines

  • Competitive pension scheme

  • Flexible benefits programme with a growing range of voluntary benefits, including the ability to purchase additional holidays

#LI-DYSON

Company

At Dyson we are focused on solving the problems that others have ignored; solving them first using our technology and ingenuity. In order to achieve this, we need to pioneer technologies that are different and authentic. This is the core of what we do and who we are. We must strive to create the future, every single day by developing new things, different things, things that go against the grain with a diverse and global team of ingenious minds.

Dyson employs 14,000 people and is present in more than 80 countries. And while we are growing fast, we want Dyson to remain a start-up in spirit with the freedom of experimentation and learning, constantly reinventing our products as well as reinventing how we work, how we sell and how we support our owners. At the same time, we are working through the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson Award and Dyson Institute to inspire future engineers and pioneering a new approach to engineering education.

Underlining everything we do in this diverse environment is the need to always show respect, supporting each other as one team to overcome whatever challenges we encounter. We drive empowerment, development and equality in an inclusive environment for our people around the world.

The future doesn’t just happen, we look to make it happen, to achieve leaps through pioneering new ideas.
