Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

You will work to ensure equipment and devices across the Health and Social Care portfolio are safe for use; overseeing all aspects of equipment management from procurement to commissioning, from maintenance to disposal, communicating complex technical matters and offering co-operation, advice and guidance to a range of people.

This is a unique role for you to showcase your specialist skill-set and your substantial experience working in an acute healthcare environment.  You will utilise your own skills and experience to facilitate and support the development of internal staff and external contractors undertaking training, development, mentoring and coaching as required.  You will also utilise your knowledge of the health care system you operate with currently, to develop solutions that are fit for St Helena and its unique operating context, putting in place long-term sustainability and succession plans.

You will deal with a wide range of medical equipment including support, patient monitoring, IV therapy, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilators, pathology, radiology, pharmacy and anaesthetic equipment used within the medical field.  Most of these will be highly complex and non-routine. It means working autonomously on equipment that will demand precision engineering techniques, expertise and control of fine tools and small components. You must maintain stock levels and receive equipment and spare parts, ensuring value for money across all activities. Undertaking safety checks and maintenance, you will be involved in the entire equipment lifecycle, requiring considerable flexibility.

Holding a BSc (Hons) or equivalent in an Electronic/Instrumentation Engineering related subject plus postgraduate experience, you have specialist medical device maintenance training delivered by manufacturer training courses. You have worked on a range of specialist complex medical devices and can interpret schematic diagrams for fault finding and component identification. Having worked in an acute healthcare environment you have up-to-date knowledge of Medical Device Directive and regulations and of national CQC Essential standards and MHRA publications. You also have a working knowledge of ISO9002 or ISO9001-2000 and of medical devices electrical safety testing.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

• Salary: £40,000pa
