AWE is currently recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer (Trials Manager) to join its world leading laser facility contributing to the successful operations of the Target Fabrication team. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving projects from concept, through design, procurement, manufacture, and assembly, to handover to our Plasma Physics experimental facility. This is an ideal opportunity for those who have a keen interest in science and engineering, as well as being interested in a role where they are fully supported to work in our Orion Laser Facility.

Location - Reading area

Package - £33,850 - £44,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

The role within our Target Fabrication team will give the successful candidate the opportunity to manage multifaceted projects working with highly skilled scientists and engineers operating cutting-edge equipment. The successful candidate will develop their knowledge in a wide range of Target Fabrication capabilities such as precision machining, micro assembly, coating, chemistry, and characterisation capabilities as well as interacting with specialist external suppliers. Working as part of a successful team, this unique and exciting role is key to the delivery of targets that support High Energy Density plasma physics experiments on laser facilities both in the UK and around the world.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Contributing to the delivery of conceptual designs, detail designs, manufacturing specifications, operational documentation and validation evidence for mechanical engineering solutions in relation to defined requirements

  • Managing the delivery of Target Fabrication campaigns in accordance with the company trials procedures to meet the requirements of the plasma physics customer

  • Managing bespoke trials from the development of concepts and ideas into plasma physics targets

  • Developing and producing trial documentation to meet customer requirements, as required by the trials procedures

  • Taking responsibility for the quality of the work you deliver

  • Being accountable for the safety of all aspects of work you carryout

Whilst not considered a checklist, candidates would benefit from having the following:

  • A HNC / HND in engineering or equivalent experience

  • Knowledge or experience of manufacturing processes

  • Knowledge or experience of project life cycles

  • Knowledge or experience interpreting engineering drawings

  • A professional membership or registration preferred, or a willingness to work towards professional registration

  • An ability to manage multi-faceted projects and engage with staff at all levels in the business

  • An ability to work as a team and individually

  • Experience of CAD software, preferably NX or willingness to learn

  • Experience of MS Office and general IT skills

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
