Are you a qualified and pro-active Safety Engineer? Join a diverse team of technicians, engineers and scientists and play a key role in implementing the highest safety standards in the operation of highly specialized laboratories and research facilities such as ISOLDE and MEDICIS.

ISOLDE is a leading Radioactive Ion Beams facility delivering over 1000 isotopes of 75 elements to an international community of about 1000 users.

MEDICIS is a facility successfully exploiting isotope mass separation techniques to deliver non-conventional radionuclides to partner institutes performing research in the rising field of targeted therapies in nuclear medicine.

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) in the Systems Department (SY) has a broad expertise on the interaction of beams with matter and applies its know-how to a large spectrum of activities including particle production, beam intercepting devices, studies on beam-matter interaction and nuclear engineering.

You will join the Radioactive Beam Sources Section (RBS), responsible for the coordination of the ISOLDE and MEDICIS facilities as well as for the fabrication of several systems including the Target and Ion Source Units, dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams.

Functions

As a Safety Engineer, you will take up the role of conventional and radiation safety expert and ensure that the section activities and installations comply with CERN Safety rules, procedures and best practices.

You will:

  • Lead the inventory of all hazards in the ISOLDE and MEDICIS facilities and theirs associated laboratories.
  • Propose and establish procedures to minimize the risk of accidents and produce emergency plans in collaboration with the CERN Fire Brigade, Medical Service and Health, Safety and Environment unit.
  • Define the specifications for future upgrades of the ISOLDE and MEDICIS facilities in view of improving the safety aspects of their operation.
  • Provide expertise in matters of safety and coordinate the operational safety aspects of the facility operation, including defining of the intervention protocols.
  • Act as Radiation Safety Support Officer (RSSO) and provide expertise in all radiation-related aspects for maintenance or upgrade activities.
  • Act as safety liaison and collaborate with the various safety groups and safety committees at CERN.
  • Organize, coordinate and document the operation, maintenance and upgrade of the safety systems, notably those that ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of the environment.
  • Support the section activities by identifying suitable elimination pathway for non-standard (chemical or radioactive) wastes.
  • Create and deliver safety-training courses.
  • Ensure the conformity of personal protective equipment (PPE) belonging to the RBS section.
  • Contribute to the safety management of the systems and facilities under the responsibility of the SY/STI Group.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of safety or a related field.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Risk assessment and the successful application of safety requirements in large-scale installations and/or maintenance activities;
  • Drafting of safety documentation;
  • Audit performance and verifications related to safety and environmental rules.

Basic knowledge of the following would be an advantage:

  • Design and operation of facilities with ionizing radiation hazards and contamination risks;
  • Safety aspects of nuclear chemistry and/or nanomaterial handling.

Technical competencies:

  • Occupational safety and risk management, including hazard identification and analysis, risk assessment and definition of compensatory measures.
  • Safety conformity assessment, including personal and collective protective equipment, machinery etc.; testing, surveillance, inspection, auditing, certification, registration, accreditation.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment, in particular for chemical safety or radiation protection.

  • Solving problems: assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely; identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

  • Communicating effectively: demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences; addressing issues of conflict constructively; expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; successfully changing other people's opinions by persuasive arguments.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
