WHAT TO EXPECT :

We are looking for a Battery Cell-Material Scientist to help develop Jaguar Land Rover's Battery Material research for the development of the next-generation batteries for traction battery systems.

As Battery Cell-Material Scientist, you will be using state-of-the-art facilities for Li-ion battery cell material investigation and will provide the power behind our vehicles working in our Powertrain Engineering team. You will find the ideal balance between performance and sustainability while responding to the environmental issues that shape our industry.

The Advanced Battery Research function contributes to the development of new technologies and features for product delivery. This role will support collaborative research with key leading UK universities and external partners. The role will support the electrification teams in the delivery of new electric vehicle programmes.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities :

* Investigation into cell design and engineering aspects of Li-ion current and future technology
* Research on cost-sensitive cell components and understanding the trade-off for a value-engineered solution
* Lead research projects investigating all aspects of battery cell performance to deliver the best pack performance over the life of the vehicle
* Definition of protocols for Cell tear down and material analysis activities to support activities and battery material performance enhancement
* Support Root Cause analysis investigation for current HV battery programs as well as warranty Investigations
* Lead cell lifetime performance research and support modelling activities
* Provide technical support on projects in mainstream engineering

WHAT YOU'LL NEED :

* Plan and deliver Jaguar Land Rover Battery Material Research to support the next generation of electrified powertrain
* Lead research activities and facilities development activities for Material Research and Lab facilities
* Investigation into cell design and engineering aspects for Li-ion current and future technology
* Research projects investigating all the aspects of battery cell performance to deliver the best pack performance over the life of the vehicle
* Definition of protocols for cell tear down and material analysis activities to support "should cost" activities and battery material performance enhancement
* Deliver knowledge capturing standard and testing procedures for the Lyons Park Advanced Battery Materials Laboratory
* Leverage the HVM Catapult collaboration with academia and Subject Matter Experts
* Deliver TCDS (Technology Creation & Development System) projects to support programme delivery

Knowledge, Skills and Experience :

Essential -
* Electrochemist background at degree level, PhD preferable
* Fundamental understanding of battery cell working principles
* Experience in cell electrochemical testing
* Experience in cell autopsy and ageing analysis
* Hands-on experience in battery cell testing and data analysis
* Experience in advanced material physical and chemical characterization:
* SEM, TEM, XRD, XRF techniques
* Surface analysis techniques (i.e. XPS)
* FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy
* Separation techniques (i.e. chromatography)
* Robust knowledge of electrode synthesis processes and material and electrode characterization, including particle size distribution (i.e. BET, DSC/TGA)
* Fundamental knowledge of different polymers and metal and glass chemistries
* Experience in leading and delivering research projects
* Previous experience in a Research role in an engineering or automotive environment
* Previous experience in working with Universities and Research partners

Desirable -
* Experience in cell/module/pack testing
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong influencing and engagement skills
* Experience in planning, coordination, delivery and reporting of requirements such as Product Creation Delivery System (PCDS)
