Job Details

How does being a national and worldwide expert in Electric and Magnetic Fields sound?

We take our Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF) responsibilities seriously. You’ll be helping set the direction of ambitious global organisation as we work towards Net Zero and the decarbonisation of the energy system.

We’ll provide you with the kind of role you’ll want to stay in. You’ll be acknowledged as a technical leader in your field and have the satisfaction of doing a job that doesn’t just protect the health of our staff but the public and environment too. Writing and influencing UK policy, managing research on behalf of the industry and having a say in everything that National Grid builds.

You’ll be involved in managing a large research portfolio and developing research projects in a number of areas. These might include potential health issues, marine issues, micro shocks and interference with implantable medical devices. Which is why you’ll be involved in projects including High Voltage (HV) cables, undersea interconnectors, substations, overhead lines and offshore connectors. You will also help assess any new technologies that might go onto the transmission system for potential EMF issues.

What you’ll need

The most important thing we’d like you to have is the ability to share scientific knowledge in a way that anyone can understand. You must be able to communicate the complex science around EMF with clarity and empathy.

You are technically minded with a scientific background and a STEM degree. You’re a strong communicator who knows how to share and interpret scientific information with a wide variety of people. A natural problem solver, you can provide solutions to issues that don’t have an existing resolution. You’re also calm, empathetic, and good under pressure. If you’re able to speak with the same ease in a concerned resident’s home as you are at an international science conference, you’re the type of person we’re looking for.

Even though you might not currently have much knowledge of EMF, you want to become an established expert in the field and have the willingness and enthusiasm to learn everything you can. You’ll need a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK and the flexibility to travel when necessary.

Your Reward

  • A competitive salary of £45,030 to £56,979 pa + Benefits Package + Training and Development. 25 days annual leave (increasing to 26 after two years’ service) plus eight statutory days The option to buy additional or sell holiday days Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. Overall 18%. Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role. Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few. Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days). Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.

Please apply for immediate consideration.
