Job Details

MBDA Missile Systems - Together. For the Future of Defence.
Guidance, Control and Navigation Graduate Engineer
The Guidance, Control and Navigation (GCN) department plays a pivotal role in the concept and life of all MBDA products. We work on high complexity weapon systems and understand how the various subsystems interact and have a direct influence on design decisions. The algorithms we design lie at the heart of the missile system.
We host 4 areas of expertise:
Guidance - figuring out a suitable trajectory, meeting customer requirements and system constraints, providing an effective route to target interception and improving the probability of success;

Control - maintaining stable flight while following the guidance demands to drive the missile onto the trajectory calculated by the guidance algorithms;

Navigation - estimating the current missile state (position, velocity and attitude/orientation) using measurements from a range of on-board sensors;

Command and Control (C2) - the component of the weapon system that interacts with the human operator. It presents the context of the mission and calculates the most effective method of engagement against threats.

What's the opportunity?

You will join a supportive and experienced team of engineers who will encourage and help you to develop skills including coding and modelling, mathematics, dynamics and control theory, utilising tools such as MATLAB/SIMULINK daily.

Work alongside other departments to increase your knowledge on the complexities of a missile, including propulsion, aerodynamics, seekers, sensors and actuators.

Broaden your technical knowledge of the design and function of a complex weapon system and have visibility of a wide range of work, from feasibility studies through to current high-profile projects.

Experience work within one of the many international teams in MBDA, with the GCN function in Paris and Rome! This doesn't always equate to travel but you may be offered the option where the opportunity arises.
Get involved with
  • Integrated navigation, such as 'Terrain Reference Navigation', and 'GPS integration';
  • Guidance algorithm design and evaluation for all phases of missile flight;
  • Autopilot and control system design and analysis;
  • Data fusion to combine data from multiple sensors;
  • Support to concept and feasibility studies;
  • Internal Research and Development to support future weapons and technology demonstrators;
  • Implementing neural networks and deep learning techniques to help solve a range of complex problems;
  • Our work is mostly MATLAB/Simulink focused which is used daily.

Entry Criteria, Salary and Benefits
  • Degree qualified (minimum 2.2) in Aeronautical engineering, Aerospace, Mathematics, Physics, Control and Systems or a related subject
  • Basic programming/coding knowledge e.g. MATLAB, C, Python.
  • £30,000 starting salary plus £3,000 joining bonus
  • Pension Scheme

Company

MBDA, a world leader in missiles and missile systems, is a multi-national group with 10,000 employees working across France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain and the United States. It has three major aeronautical and defence shareholders - Airbus Group (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Finmeccanica (25%) - and is the first truly integrated European defence company. In 2013, the Group recorded a turnover of 2.8 billion euros, produced about 3,000 missiles and added 4 billion euros of new orders to the order book which now stands at 10.8 billion euros. MBDA works with over 90 armed forces worldwide.

MBDA was created in December 2001, after the merger of the main missile producers in France, Italy and the UK. Each of these companies contributed the experience gained from fifty years of technological and operational success. The restructuring of the industry in Europe was completed with the acquisition of the German subsidiary EADS/LFK in March 2006. This further enriched MBDA’s range of technologies and products, consolidating the Group’s world-leading position in the industry.

MBDA is the only Group capable of designing and producing missiles and missile systems to meet the whole range of current and future operational requirements for the three armed forces (army, navy, air force). Overall, the Group offers a range of 45 products in service and another 15 in development.

The Group has demonstrated its ability to bring together the best skills across the whole of Europe and as a result has been chosen to lead a series of strategic multi-national programmes. These include the six-nation Meteor air superiority weapon, the Franco-British conventionally armed cruise missile, Storm Shadow/SCALP, and a family of air defence systems based on the Aster missile for France and Italy (for ground and naval based air defence) and for the UK (naval air defence for the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers).

The mastery of cutting-edge technologies is not only an advantage for MBDA in successfully developing and producing new products. It is also a means of guaranteeing customers that innovations can be made to existing products during their life span in order to meet constantly changing specifications arising from increasingly complex engagement scenarios. It is precisely this combination which makes MBDA the defence sector partner of choice in many countries around the world.
