FEA Engineer/Scientist

We have an exciting opportunity for a finite element analyst to join the Thermomechanical Effects Team to grow our simulation capability. We are looking for the successful candidate to have experience in a FEA role, however we are happy to consider candidates at various stages in their career. This role can offer excellent career development opportunities for somebody looking to gain further experience and build a career at AWE, or can provide interesting work for an experienced FEA Engineer/Scientist looking for an exciting new opportunity.

Location: Reading/Basingstoke area (on-site role)

Package: £30,000 - £50,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

The role:

The Thermomechanical Effects Team's mission is to assess the performance of nuclear weapons in extreme environments using state of the art modelling tools to predict how weapon components and systems respond to extreme temperatures and mechanical shocks. You will be constructing finite element analysis models to undertake thermo-structural response of individual components and integrated systems to push the boundaries of physics and engineering.

This is to support the design and approval process, troubleshoot complex problems and assist with new technology research. This will involve constructing mesh models from drawings/CAD, de-featuring models and applying appropriate meshes to models to enable quantities of interest to be resolved.

To be a success in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's in physics or engineering. Although not essential a relevant PhD would be beneficial

  • Experience in finite element analysis or other numerical simulation discipline

  • Experience in different mesh types and their application to complex geometry

  • Experience in performing dynamic and thermo-mechanical analysis would be beneficial

  • Knowledge of at least one data analysis tool (Python, Perl, C++, Fortran) would be beneficial

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
