Job Details

Are you working in the field of automotive functional safety, safety engineering or ADAS development?

Do you want to take your career in a new direction and help shape the adoption of automated vehicles in the UK?

Do you want to be at the forefront of policy development that ensures safe and secure operation on public roads?

At the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) we now have an exciting role for a Vehicle System Safety Specialist to join our Automated Vehicle Technologies Group where you will be instrumental in applying your technical experience to ensure that the information presented by vehicle manufacturers and system developers provides robust evidence of safety.

About the role

The role is situated in the Type Approval Authority, whose overall function is to certify vehicles prior to vehicle registration. Historically this has involved approving the activities performed by VCA’s Technical Service operations, in particular testing carried out to UNECE Regulations. The UK’s exit from the European Union brings the establishment of a new UK Type Approval Scheme with an expectation for greater governance of vehicles fitted with Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The first instances of ADS safety assurance will be the introduction of Automated Lane Keeping Systems and the advanced trialling of novel automated vehicles.

This role will be actively involved in setting the requirements for the governance of safety arguments and the approach to confirm the evidence is appropriate. There will also be recognition of technical experience by taking an active role in leading knowledge upskilling across the Agency through mentoring and passing on your invaluable knowledge and experience.

Person specification

You will have:

  • Experience of product development activities for safety critical systems, such as braking, steering, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or Automated Driving Systems.
  • Experience of working with automotive safety standards and management systems, such as ISO 26262 or ISO 21448.
  • Experience of safety analysis at a system level, such as safety concepts, hazard analysis, risk assessments, FMEA, FTA, SPTA.
  • Experience of knowledge sharing or mentoring on technical topics relating to vehicle systems safety.
  • Communication skills using a variety of media as appropriate (i.e., presentation skills. Written documentation).

Qualifications & Licences

Qualification in an automotive, engineering or professional discipline equivalent to Bachelor’s degree, including Honours and Foundation degree and Diplomas of Higher Education. Alternatively, a NQF level 5 and 6. You will also possess a full UK Driver’s Licence.

Closing date: 11:55pm, Thursday 24th November 2022.
