Job Details

Deliver complex programmes that deliver net zero emissions

The challenge

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has a vision to build a stronger, greener future and to make the UK a great place to work and do business.  The Net Zero Innovation Portfolio is a £1 billion fund to accelerate the commercialisation of low-carbon technologies, systems and business models in power, buildings and industry. It will decrease the costs of decarbonisation and set the UK on the path to a low carbon future. You could be part of it.

About the role

You will ensure that the Government’s net zero innovation policy and programmes support both economic growth and the UK’s ability to reduce carbon emissions. Reporting to the Director of Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy, you will lead teams responsible for net zero innovation delivery, most likely in the areas of nuclear, renewables, energy storage and flexibility, and built innovation. You will also take on a Project Director role for the Rolls Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Low Cost Nuclear Project. Managing secretariat activities for the cross-governmental Net Zero Innovation Board, chaired by the Chief Scientific Adviser, is also part of your remit.

This is an exciting role which combines taking a strategic view of how best to develop and support innovative net zero technologies with the design and delivery of a complex programme involving multiple funding partners and delivery agencies. Addressing value for money and commercial risk are key elements of the role, as is leadership of a large multidisciplinary team.

About you

We’re looking for a highly qualified professional engineer who combines project and programme management expertise with strategic oversight and commercial awareness. You’ll be ready to manage long-term, complex commercial relationships with a range of suppliers and partners. Meanwhile, your excellent communication skills mean you have the ability to influence stakeholders at senior level, including ministers, both in the UK and internationally. You’ll also demonstrate strength in leadership, including the capacity to manage, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary team.

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits including a generous leave allowance, flexible working options, learning and development tailored to your role, and a Civil Service pension.

Company

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy brings together responsibilities for business, industrial strategy, science, innovation, energy and climate change. Our work is huge in its scope - from leading the government’s relationship with business, to championing world-leading research and tackling climate change.
