You’re wired differently. So is our tech.

London is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world – and policing it is no easy task. It takes a huge number of people with a wide range of skills and experience to keep over eight million people safe. Some of those skills include seeing opportunities in technology – and that’s where you come in.

As an Operations Technician, you’ll play a crucial part in protecting London. You’ll be part of our talented, tight-knit team, helping to develop technical solutions for frontline policing operations. As we expand, we now have a number of vacancies for exciting roles.

Our Operational Support Unit (OSU) tackles a wide range of exciting projects often involving CCTV and video surveillance, but also touching other areas including Live Facial Recognition (LFR). The Unit supports Internet Protocol (IP) networks, CCNA Routing and Switching, Radio Frequency (RF) and Satellite communications. The Unit also uses traditional mechanical engineering techniques including manual or Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining and MIG welding. The unit also uses 3D scanning and printing using the latest design and modelling technologies to help solve problems. Camera technology, Coding, Drones and Microprocessors (Arduino and Raspberry Pi) all form part of our teams varied skillset to handle all kinds of technical challenges.

Your work will include testing and evaluating specialist product performance and getting hands-on with surveillance systems, installations, radio transmissions, prototyping and designing unique solutions. You’ll need an appropriate qualification or suitable experience in a technical field. Above all, you’ll need a great aptitude for solving problems and technical training will be given where appropriate.

The role can take you across London so you’ll need a full UK driving licence. You may sometimes be working outside office hours, so you’ll need to be flexible. And while this is an exciting role, your discretion is vital – which includes having or applying for MV/SC security level clearance.

As well as the opportunities to work across the city, there are many other benefits you can expect. This includes flexible working patterns, a competitive annual leave allowance increasing with your length of service, Met sports and social clubs and much more. We’re always working to build upon our diverse workforce to reflect the city we serve, so you’ll enjoy a varied and fulfilling working environment.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.

As a Disability Confident Committed Employer the Met have committed to ensuring that disabled people and those with long-term health conditions have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.

Company

London covers 620 square miles and is home to millions of people speaking over 300 different languages. In this most vibrant and complex of cities, this presents an ever-evolving challenge for the Met when fighting to reduce crime - and the fear of crime.

Forging close relationships, building trust and understanding the issues within London’s different communities all form part of the fundamental platform on which effective, credible policing is built.

As a result, we must continue to recruit the brightest and the best people from every background and use the full spectrum of their skills, knowledge and experience to make London safer for everybody.
