Office for Product Safety & Standards
From policy-making to incident investigation, your product testing expertise will provide vital evidence
The challenge
Regulation is a powerful Government tool to address market failures, influence behaviour and promote positive action. Crafted and delivered well, regulation can be an enabler of growth, innovation and efficiency. Here at the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), part of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), our goal is to be a trusted product regulator for the UK. Join OPSS as part of the Centre of Product Testing and Research, and use your technical expertise help inform policy development, incident investigation and the delivery and enforcement of product regulations.
About the role
Joining our newly refurbished laboratories as a Senior Test Engineer, you will have access to facilities for a wide range of testing including metrology, mechanical, electrical, chemical and flammability. Taking the lead on product testing, you will apply your technical expertise to devising new scientific methodologies and ideas for research and compliance testing, and verifying the validity and robustness of test processes and outputs. You can expect to collaborate with other technical specialists, including those in science, engineering, research and analysis. You will also supervise the work of your team, ensuring that they are suitably trained and that they operate safely and efficiently.
About you
You’ll bring hands-on experience of overseeing and co-ordinating testing and research activities to identify potential hazards, along with fault diagnosis or reverse engineering of products. This will ideally include familiarity with test method development and incident investigation. Capable of assessing technical documentation and processes, you will be ready to have input to policy and enforcement decision-making. You’ll have a proven ability to work well with junior and senior colleagues, always maintaining a collaborative, can-do attitude. Capable of delivering at pace, you’ll demonstrate a strong focus on quality and a capacity for good decision-making.
Benefits
We offer a range of benefits including a generous leave allowance, flexible working options, learning and development tailored to your role, and a Civil Service pension.
Company
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy brings together responsibilities for business, industrial strategy, science, innovation, energy and climate change. Our work is huge in its scope - from leading the government’s relationship with business, to championing world-leading research and tackling climate change.
