Overview of the role

Tokamaks have challenging power demands, requiring careful design and control of the power systems which serve them. The successful applicant will join the Electrical Engineering team. They will enjoy a unique opportunity to develop solutions to the varied power distribution challenges presented by our ambitious and cutting-edge tokamak development programme, and the diverse range of plant which this will employ. The role will involve steady-state and dynamic modelling of HV distribution system behaviour, and system design. The successful applicant will work closely with other engineers across departments, to achieve optimal, tightly integrated overall plant design. You will also benefit from the unique opportunity of participating in the upgrade and operational programmes of Tokamak Energy’s existing tokamaks.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct detailed requirements capture, and specification of power distribution systems
  • Produce concept designs of HV power distribution systems
  • Perform power-flow and other steady-state analysis of HV power distribution networks
  • Perform transient behaviour and dynamic stability analysis of HV power distribution systems with highly dynamic loads
  • Provide guidance and direction on applicable design standards and codes
  • Work alongside other engineers and contractors to develop substation and distribution network layouts
  • Work with other engineers and contractors to capture earthing system requirements and develop design solutions
  • Work with other engineers and contractors to develop power system control and protection design solutions
  • Participate in upgrade and maintenance programmes on our existing tokamaks
  • Fulfil an operations role during operational programmes on our existing tokamaks

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Working at height (including ladders, scaffolding and powered access platforms)
  • Night working (11pm-6am)
  • Driving on Company business
  • Working with ionising radiation Working with electricity (LV & HV)
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH)
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business

Requirements and attributes we value: Essential skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, in a relevant discipline, and a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartered status
  • Extensive experience of requirements capture, specification and design of HV power distribution systems up to at least 33 kV
  • Extensive experience of both steady-state and dynamic power system analysis using ETAP, PSCAD or equivalent software
  • Proficiency in use of AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience in the use of CDEGS or equivalent earthing design software
  • Field experience of HV power system commissioning, testing, and operation
  • Familiarity with power system control and protection specification and design
  • Familiarity with power system SCADA, including IEC 61850

  • Comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously

Working arrangements

Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% on-site / 40% home working split.
