Job Details

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

The Team has set a new benchmark for Formula One success during the sport’s current Hybrid era, winning consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the Constructors’ Championship in 2021.

The Powertrain Integration and Transmission Design Department forms part of the Design Office group at our Brackley Campus, covering a number of key performance and reliability differentiators of the F1 car. We take responsibility for the gearbox, hydraulics, PU cooling systems, fuel system, pneumatics and exhausts.

We are looking for both Powertrain Structural Analysis Engineers and Senior Powertrain Structural Analysis Engineers with a demonstrable track record of ownership of analysis projects in reliability-critical applications.

In order to be considered for the Senior role, candidates must have demonstrable experience in leading and managing complex projects and teams. Seniors will be accountable for the delivery of these complex projects and therefore must evidence these self-sufficient, key leadership skills and experience.

Our Mid-level role will work on similar projects and will require the majority of the same technical skills but will not have the project management and delivery accountability aspect in the role.

Reporting to our Lead Structural Analysis Engineer (Powertrain), you will create structural analysis models to support the delivery of “Right First Time” engineering problems. Your solutions, experience and judgement will make a tangible contribution to the on-and off- track success of the team.

Our focus is the Formula One Team, but this role will also offer exposure to Applied Science, where we leverage the best motorsport technologies for our customers across the domains of land, sea, and air.

The Role:

As our Senior or Mid-level Powertrain Structural Analysis Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking technical ownership of the structural approval of complex Powertrain assemblies and make the correct judgements on how to approach the analysis within the time constraints.

  • Building detailed multi-body models and carry out static and dynamic analysis of both metallic and composite components, covering environmental, abuse and fatigue cases.

  • Able to use a broad suite of analysis techniques such as contact, non-linear material, large displacement, modal, and optimisation.

  • Following your analysed components through manufacturing, testing and track running to confirm their fitness for purpose, assisting the group with suitable containments for component feedback generated during prove-out, at the race event, or during servicing.

  • Working closely with our colleagues at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains to identify, measure and deliver the best overall lap time solutions to the circuit.

  • Pushing the boundaries in pursuit of new analysis capabilities, emerging toolsets and reporting methods.

  • Supporting design activities across the group, which will include completing structural analysis projects outside of motorsport as part of our Applied Science programmes.

What we are looking for:

  • Demonstrable analysis experience in an environment requiring broad analysis and application

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification.

  • Communicative and collaborative skills to deliver effective cross departmental results.

  • Self-sufficient and self-reliant – able to critically appraise own results and the work of others, working autonomously and with minimal supervision.

  • Not afraid to ask, aware of your own blind spots, willing to learn, and accepting of change.

Advantageous (but not essential) Experience

  • Detailed knowledge of Hyperworks and Abaqus simulation software

  • Data analysis including use of ATLAS 10

  • Use of 3DX for design review

  • Awareness of additive manufacturing techniques (metallics and plastics)

  • Experience in F1, LMP, WRC, automotive manufacturers or suppliers, aerospace or defence

What The Role Will Offer

  • An environment of no-blame culture and first-class learning.

  • Access to class-leading testing facilities to fully verify and correlate your analysis work.

  • The combination of exposure across all Powertrain disciplines that comes from working within a single co-ordinated group, combined with multiple exciting customer programmes, provides excellent career progression and personal development opportunities to the right candidate.

What do we as a team offer:

At the heart of our performance are our people. Every member of our team has a voice and plays their part in contributing to our successes on and off the racetrack.

We take pride in creating an innovative, collaborative and high-performance culture where all of our team members are respected, empowered and valued.

Through our Accelerate 25 programme, we are continuously working to make our team even more diverse and inclusive. We welcome applications from all and are committed to attracting, recruiting and retaining the most talented individuals.

Our riverside campus is powered by 100% renewably sourced energy and features an on-site gym and exercise studio, subsidised restaurant and on-site parking with EV chargers available.

We offer a competitive and attractive package of benefits including a generous bonus scheme, Mercedes car lease scheme, private medical cover, life assurance and 25 days holiday. We pride ourselves on our family-friendly environment, employee well-being programme and offer flexible working opportunities.
