This exciting opportunity to join our team has been created because of our continued success and expansion within the marketplace, in particular the renewable energy industry. We are looking to recruit an experienced Design Manager to oversee the management of the Design and CAD teams; the role is diverse, challenging and rewarding.

The Design Manager will ensure that the department produces designs that conform to statutory requirements, meet the design specification and are commercially viable. You will be given the opportunity to practice and develop a wide range of skills including specification of HV primary equipment, design of protection and control schemes, reviewing and conducting simulation and modelling studies to demonstrate compliance. As the design manager you are likely to be a specialist in a subject area but will have knowledge across a broad spectrum of electrical disciplines.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include:

▶         Responsibility for managing the delivery of designs within agreed timeframes to a high quality that reflects Powersystems reputation as high voltage specialists

▶         Manage multiple design projects and prioritise conflicting project deadlines

▶         Communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and project engineers, to understand their expectations and justify your design decisions

▶         Support the continued development of electrical design engineers by providing technical guidance

▶         Successfully manage a team of engineers and provide wider support for the project engineers for technical queries

▶         Ensure all designs are designed for safety and are compliant with CDM and Health and Safety regulations, including producing design risk assessments, and effectively communicating risks to project engineers and construction operatives

▶         Producing standards for technical specifications for primary equipment and protection and control equipment for HV substations operating at voltages from 11 kV to 132 kV

▶         Prepare design packages for DNO contestable works and electrical balance of plant works (private works) from 11 kV to 132 kV

▶         Work closely with the in-house Design Engineers and CAD technicians to generate equipment layouts, cable route drawings, construction, and legal plans for new HV connections

▶         Manage and review simulation studies for generation connections undertaken by other consultants or carried out in-house, including load flow, reactive power capability, fault level analysis, power quality, and harmonic studies to demonstrate compliance with Engineering Recommendations, the Distribution Code, the Grid Code, and industry standards

▶         Attend sites for inspection and design purposes and attend manufacturers factory acceptance tests when required

▶         Build relationships with clients, and attend design and project co-ordination meetings with clients, their consultants, and DNO and TNO representatives

▶         Project a professional image to clients and colleagues

▶         Contribute to the future success of Powersystems and its clients

Essential criteria:

▶         Gained relevant experience of high voltage electrical engineering design (11 kV to 132kV) within the electrical contracting or utility industries. You will possess excellent technical knowledge and be able to apply this in a practical way

▶         Full UK driving licence

▶         Right to Work within the UK without limitation

Desirable criteria:

▶         A higher degree or post graduate qualification in power systems would be an advantage

▶         Have obtained or be working towards professional registration with the IET at IENG / CENG level

▶         Strong report writing skills and the ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner

▶         Open to change, resilient and proactive
