At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

We have fantastic opportunities available in our Composite Design Working Group for Mid and Senior level Composite Design Engineers. You must be comfortable challenging yourself and others with respect and passion to drive our projects forward whilst striving to achieve the best possible results.

Key Responsibilities for Mid-level Composite Design Engineers:           

  • Working closely with Aerodynamicists, Structural Engineers, and other engineering departments you will be responsible for supporting and delivering optimised designs to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability.

  • Understand and drive cost effective design solutions.

  • Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs achieving optimal car performance.

  • Generating 3D models, Assemblies and 2D drawings including the definition and documentation of manufacturing information (including laminate definition).

  • Specification of composite NDT procedures and results analysis, ensuring reliability of parts assemblies throughout part life cycle.

  • Support in the definition of performance and reliability test & development programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Management of assigned designs and systems throughout component life cycle and in support of the team’s reliability function.

Additional responsibilities for Senior Composite Design Engineers:

  • Responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions for significant projects within the specific Car Group area, providing strong ownership of assigned project thought the product life cycle.

  • Understand and drive cost effective design solutions.

  • Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs achieving optimal car performance.

  • Highlighting risks to Lead Engineer & HoD throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Leading Design reviews of assigned projects with respect to both performance and reliability.

  • Delivering quality schemes to Stress Group in an efficient manner, allowing sufficient time to provide an optimised design solution.

  • Responsible for checking drawing releases for any supporting Engineers ensuring they meet MAMG design standards.

  • Collating and reporting on final assembly mass as stated within the mass tracker in terms of both CoG and mass.

  • Definition of performance and reliability test & development programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Technical resolution of car feedback allocated to your projects and supporting the Groups Reliability Engineer.

To be considered for a Mid-level or a Senior Composite Design Engineer we are looking for candidates to have the following qualifications and experience.

Candidate Profile for Mid-level Composite Design Engineers:

  • Composite, mechanical, automotive or aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar qualification.

  • Strong Composite design experience with good understanding of materials and manufacturing techniques.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX composite and surfacing design package would be beneficial.

  • Use of finite element analysis tools (ideally with Catia V5/3DX package) and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.

  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration.

  • High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines.

Additional requirements for Senior Composite Design Engineers:

  • Having multiple years’ experience in F1, with a proven track record for leading and delivering significant car projects.

  • A clear and holistic understanding of racing car design.

  • Understanding and ability to perform hand calculation produce reliable and optimised designs.

  • An in-depth understanding and ability to interpret FEA results.
