*A Specialist Allowance of up to £3,000 per annum is also available for this role.

Come and do the kind of engineering that made you want to be an engineer. Stretch your technical skills while building human understanding. Promote sustainability and create new materials. And, alongside world-leading scientists and technologists, shape projects that improve lives, and daily life, in the UK and far beyond.

Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you're equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

We are looking for electronics engineer to design, develop and test electronics for both ground and space based scientific instruments and test equipment. The post is based within the RAL Space Imaging Systems Division Electronics Design Group. We build electronic systems for spaceflight and hence quality is paramount in our work.

Working closely with the Instrument science team and engineers you will be well organised, flexible, adaptable and have a good understanding of electronic engineering to allow an innovative approach to the mission challenges.

Having the ability to work effectively within a team over all stages of the design cycle and often across multiple projects at the same time forms a key part of the role. This provides exciting career opportunities and allows you to have project responsibility from the outset within a close supporting framework. Recent programmes have been on Lunar and Mars landers along with Earth and Solar observation missions.

The role may include the following activities:

  • Analogue and digital circuit design
  • PCB layout of complex multilayer boards
  • Leading the functional testing of assembled boards
  • VHDL design work
  • The production of manufacturing drawings and parts lists
  • Writing specifications, test plans, test reports and other documentation
  • Carrying out FMEA, reliability, parts stress and worst-case analyses
  • Communicating your work at project reviews, progress meetings and outreach activities

If you are an engineer with more experience, you will also:

  • Play a leading role in project teams, with coordination between different disciplines
  • Provide technical support and advice to other specialists in the division
  • Take a lead role in design reviews
  • Provide significant contributions to proposals for new work

Where government regulation allows some travel within the UK and overseas will be required and at times it will also be necessary to work in a cleanroom environment.

You will need:

  • A degree in electronic engineering or closely related subject or equivalent experience
  • Analogue electronic design experience
  • Digital design experience including knowledge of VHDL and/or Verilog
  • Experience of PCB layout
  • Prior use of electronics CAD and modelling tools, especially schematic capture and circuit simulation
  • Demonstrable practical skills such as verification and testing of PCBs and components
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

We ask some of the biggest questions in the universe, to answer some of the biggest challenges in the world. Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers and business-support team explore the unknown across every field you could think of. And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us.

Applicants who are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone on 07710 115815.

The closing date for applications is 10th April 2023.
