Senior Mechanical Design Engineers

Location: Reading / Basingstoke Area

Salary: £42,650 - £63,000 (dependent on experience)

Ideally, we are looking for candidates with experience of:

  • Working on development, testing and evaluation of theoretical designs, ideally including work on pressure systems and pressure vessel design
  • Application of knowledge to confirm designs are prepared which comply with relevant legislation, standards and design requirements
  • Highly effective in reviewing technical work across a range of activities; can demonstrate the skills needed to review, direct and sign-off the technical work of others, utilising the specialist skills of others as appropriate
  • Wide knowledge of engineering design
  • Design methodology (the design sequence from specification to manufacture, use of check lists etc.); material selection; Stress Analysis; Standard Components; Pressure vessel codes/standards, Computer Aided methods (especially CAD); Finite Element Analysis; Joining methods; Costing
  • Good knowledge of design and project management
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication, report-writing and presentation skills along with confidence in dealing with a wide range of stakeholders including customers, contractors, designers and plant operators
  • Working in a nuclear environment under licence conditions is desirable but not essential

You will be responsible for:

  • The technical management of the GTS Programme, demonstrating control of cost and quality
  • Working for and alongside the Technical Authority (TA) GTS (for technical matters), as a senior design engineer for the development of possible future options. This will include working closely with the TA(GTS) & GTS Product Design Lead (PDL) on matters such as the detailed design and component development of potential future and current systems, with elements of research
  • Ensuring compliance with Company Assurance Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) and statutory requirements
  • Ensuring the design intent is maintained throughout the lifecycle
  • Aiding the development of less experienced engineers through formal and informal, technical mentoring, provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
  • Ensuring application of standards is proportionate and that engineering best practice is adopted
  • Liaising with other discipline areas to ensure overall design intent is maintained
  • Reviewing and checking Design Engineers work in a timely manner
  • Producing high quality technical reports and presentations as required
  • Monitoring and assessing competence of Design Engineers in relevant discipline area
  • Management oversight of the manufacture and testing of gas systems
  • Identify and support opportunities for cost savings, efficiencies and business improvements
  • To liaise closely with the US and help enable collaborative work
  • Management oversight of analysis, modelling and reporting on test results and incorporate into design modifications
  • Contributing to integrated safety when reviewing engineering designs and ensure that all technical and design risks are identified and appropriately managed to meet project and AWE requirements

Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • Ability to produce creative designs and make informed design decisions
  • Ability to interact with and motivate staff at all levels and of varying disciplines
  • Computer literate with IT skills; particularly computer aided design
  • Surveying mechanical engineering designs, systems and equipment function
  • Researching and assessing new products and innovations
  • Carrying out feasibility studies for new technical developments
  • Self-motivated; able to work as a leader and as part of a team

Ideally, we would expect candidates to have a degree or equivalent qualification in a science or engineering discipline or equivalent vocational qualification.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the role and be willing and able to travel within the UK and overseas as required (if applicable).
