Software Engineer- Orion Laser Facility

Package: £25,850 - £36,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

Location: Reading/Basingstoke area

The Orion laser facility is the size of a football stadium and contains a large neodymium glass laser system operated in ultra-clean conditions. It delivers some of the most powerful laser beams ever created.

As a software team we create and support the control systems and the SCADA interface to help deliver this capability. The systems are created for the scientists to use and operate this tool, it consists of hundreds of screens and thousands of process points, and we are looking to upgrade these control systems ready for he next 10 years.

As a member of the Orion Software team your main responsibilities will include:

  • Creating Software control for laser diagnostic instruments and devices
  • Writing software that controls sub-systems via HMI's
  • Supporting the Orion laser team with any software issues
  • Writing technical documentation to meet customer requirements, as required
  • Ensuring high quality of the work you deliver
  • Accountable for the safety of all aspects of work you carry out

Whilst not considered a checklist, candidates would benefit from having the following:

  • An ONC/HNC in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience
  • At least one Software programming system / language, preferably using one of these packages :
    - Labview,
    - C(any variation),
    - VBA,
    - Python,
    - Java,
    - Any SCADA packages
  • Experience of project life cycles and configuration control
  • Professional membership or registration preferred, or a willingness to work towards professional registration
  • Ability to work as part of a team and individually
  • Willingness to learn other software languages including Labview

Candidates must be willing to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and on occasions travel within the UK and overseas.
