Technical Operations Officers

London

£36,733 including London weighting

We are MI6. Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role at MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

Are you ready to ditch your desk for a career that makes a difference? We’re a highly trained, motivated team with diverse skill sets. And we’re looking for Technical Operations Officers to bring their own unique knowledge and experience to the mission. As part of our team, you’ll plan, manage and deliver technical operations across locations in the UK and overseas, using a wide range of technical tools and skills to deliver intelligence that enables us to protect national security. You’ll work alongside other technical officers from an array of specialisms, including software development, computer network infrastructure, RF/telecommunication systems and cyber security.

A keen problem-solver, you’ll have a proactive attitude and the aptitude to take on demanding and time-sensitive tasks. Making informed and timely decisions are your strengths, as you’ll respond to a range of situations with sensitivity, both independently and as part of a team. A confident communicator, you’ll also be able to clearly explain complex information to people who don’t have a technical background, liaising with different departments across the UK Intelligence Community and His Majesty’s Government.

Every project at MI6 is different, and the varied nature of our work means there’s never a dull day. This role is practical and hands-on, so you’ll be using your skills in the field to support our missions. You’ll be based in the UK, but there’ll be plenty of opportunities to work overseas – sometimes for extended periods and at short notice. So, you’ll need to be dedicated, enthusiastic and willing to travel.

Everyone at MI6 is different, which is what provides us with the diverse skills and experiences we need to succeed in intelligence missions. You might be a talented engineer, have experience from the armed forces or have specialist academic knowledge in computing. Or you might have a degree in STEM, or another technology-related field - although this isn’t essential. Whatever your background, you’ll be motivated, discrete and keen to learn and develop throughout your career.

A career as a Technical Operations Officer comes with a range of benefits to suit your lifestyle. You’ll start on a salary of £36,733 (including London Weighting), with 25 days Annual Leave - automatically increasing to 30 days after 5 years' service. You’ll have access to our gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars, plus a cycle to work scheme and interest-free season ticket loan. You’ll be enrolled in our excellent pension scheme too, and we also offer paid parental and adoption leave.

At MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
