Job Description

RACE is a leading laboratory, solution provider and operator of robotics and autonomous systems. Our cross-functional competencies enable us to  deliver innovative solutions that combine advanced control systems, sophisticated mechanical designs, state-of-the-art sensing, and extraordinary performance. We also develop sophisticated VR, optimisation, and planning tools to enhance these systems. We have a dynamic, and highly motivated team of 80 engineers, scientists and technicians devoted to building systems that perform tasks in some of the most extreme environments in the world. We are currently developing large complex remote handling and robotic systems for a variety of different industries.

Who are we looking for?

A a Principal Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineer you will provide technical and project leadership on large, complex, cross-disciplinary projects within RACE, influencing the direction of UKAEA Projects and the customer organisation. You'll provide specialist technical knowledge and direction in a complex field of Remote Handling in a safety regulated, high-radiation environment. You will propose, define, manage, and deliver the major projects and lead the project teams. You'll be a point of authority across the multiple disciplines working on the projects (mechanical, electrical and control) and advise on technical solutions, designs and/or critical plant operational issues.

What will you be responsible for?

- Accountable for leading the programme from concept through to detailed design, manufacture, installation and testing as part of the wider portfolio.
- Provide expert knowledge in Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Design throughout project lifecycle in and around PLC, motion control, automation and functional safety systems.
- Build UKAEA’s internal capability for delivery of enhancement programs for CCFE’s facilities as well as for future fusion and other devices.
- Working extensively with the customer, their suppliers, other research institutions in the UK and across Europe, as well as industrial suppliers to the UKAEA.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Proven record of delivering complex projects to time and budget.
- Extensive programming experience in PLCs and motion control systems for automation applications, specifically Beckhoff, Copley, Siemens, Pilz and Allen Bradley or equivalent industrial leaders.
- Proven track record managing engineering teams developing complex high technology systems.
- Experience in requirements capture and validation, including a systems-based approach to designing control systems.
- Experience with harsh environmental considerations and highly regulated industries.
- A relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience.
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent experience.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- The design constraints imposed by nuclear environments, particularly fusion.
- Design of remote handling control systems.
