Senior Design Engineer (Control & Instrumentation)

Location: Aldermaston, Berkshire

Package: £44,990 - £71,110 (dependent on experience and suitability)

What to expect

The ongoing through-life surveillance and maintenance of our Facilities, Infrastructure and Process Capabilities forms an essential part of our regulatory commitment to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). Our assets must remain not only technically capable, but resilient to operational risks and obsolescence. The role of the Senior Design Engineer (SDE) is central to assessing ongoing compliance, delivering in-house design solutions, and providing technical guidance to the Infrastructure Projects Delivery (IPD) Engineering function. You will be involved in the unique application of conventional engineering designs and techniques to an unconventional process producing a unique product.

What will you be doing?

You will be working within a multi-discipline design engineering delivery team, providing technical advice and design solutions for extant facility upgrades, in addition to new designs to meet unique technical challenges. You will work closely with process, facilities, construction, and commissioning teams to deliver an integrated design solution. You will be supporting on-site surveys throughout the project lifecycle and assisting in the resolution of technical queries and managing design change processes during Implementation phases. You will support formal design review meetings, presenting design data and provide evidence of requirement compliance.

You will assist in design integration and configuration activities across a portfolio of projects, ensuring common design principles are adopted and lessons learnt are shared with peers to create a culture of good engineering practice. You will lead and coordinate the incoming and outgoing design data via the document control centre to ensure changes are identified, and that the accuracy of drawings held on file are updated and maintained.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

We would love to hear from individuals with a recognised engineering-related qualification (HNC/D/Degree) with the ability to work across functions, providing a supportive interface between the Facility, Safety Case, Subject Matter Experts and Technical Authorities. We will be looking for you to have some of the following knowledge and experience:

  • Functional safety design standards and principles

  • Applicable industrial legislation and standards

  • Cyber risk to Operational Technology

  • Development of design specifications

  • Engineering Design Substantiation

  • Ability to understand and interrogate PLC code

  • Familiar with C&I CAD drawings standards

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management

  • Self-starter with ability to work in a passionate engineering environment

  • Understand responsibilities under the CDM regulations
