The salary is broken down as £55,469 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale - £60,507 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

As the Higher Technologist/Engineer in our Physical Protection Group (PPG) you will use your engineering skills to make sure our officers have the best protection schemes. From vehicle armour to body armour and helmets, we develop the most effective defences.  Furthermore, we are constantly exploring new ways to combat the physical threats they face.

Physical Protection Group is responsible for the protection schemes for over 30,000 officers and up to 15,000 staff. We use science and engineering to evaluate threats (including ballistics and bladed weapons) and assess potential solutions.  As part of this highly skilled team, you will be integral to PPG activities.  Day-to-day, you will plan trials (to test prototypes and off-the-shelf products), record data and summarise the results.  It is important that you can use scientific instrumentation and work as part of a team.  A hands-on approach is vital along with the willingness to travel and, on occasions, work and stay outside of Greater London.  You will also need to load and unload vehicles, and work at external sites, at times.

Physical Protection Group sits within Threat Mitigation Technologies (TMT) whose overall aim is to provide the highest level of engineering and scientific support to front-line MPS operations in order to find and mitigate some of the most significant threats that London faces from terrorism, extremism and serious crime.

With a qualification (ideally degree-level) in an engineering or relevant science subject, you will have extensive knowledge and experience of impact testing and kinematics.  You will also need knowledge of mathematics, statistics and material properties.  Experience of armour and/or automotive engineering would be a definite advantage.  However, we are also interested in your ability to carry out technical projects. You should have experience of running trials, using instrumentation, recording data and writing reports. You will need to be self-motivated and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.  Experience of working within a quality management system (QMS), such as ISO9001, is beneficial.

Key experience and skills

The individual will need:

  • extensive experience of working on technical projects, with experience of planning and running trials, using instrumentation, recording data and writing reports
  • experience of managing complex projects of technical work
  • to be able to design, research and develop capabilities (either solely or with other agencies)

  • the ability to acquire, analyse and report information accurately

  • to have a professional approach, especially when working with sensitive and classified information

  • the ability to confidently present information to others, including senior officers/staff, government colleagues and other bodies (eg universities), and to represent PPG in meetings

  • to have managerial experience for staff (reporting directly)

  • to implement good practices for working safely

  • to be self-motivated and a team player

  • to hold a UK driving licence and be committed to drive/travel as part of their job

  • experience with budgets, financial reporting and being prepared to assist in the preparation of bids for funding

  • to develop and maintain QMS within technical projects and to be prepared to assist in quality management, such as quality audits and surveillance.
