About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Senior RF Electronics Engineer (internally titled Senior Diagnostics Physicist / Engineer) to join our Diagnostics team in the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation enabling world class scientific research to take place at Diamond.
The Diagnostics group provides a variety of instrumentation and feedback systems to act as the “eyes and ears” throughout the particle accelerator and beamline complex, characterising the electron and photon beams, and thus enabling control and delivery of high-quality beams for the scientific user community.
This role will define, design, and deploy state-of-the-art custom RF instrumentation for world leading beam diagnostics. A key element of the role is the delivery of new diagnostics instrumentation for the future accelerator upgrade Diamond-II featuring RF design and characterisation, electronics design including PCB layouts, and developing prototypes to ensure suitability for production at scale. Duties also include the maintenance, research and development of existing diagnostics instrumentation and feedback systems. You will apply knowledge and do hands-on practical work in the lab, on the accelerator and beamlines.
Further responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining a current knowledge of other comparable projects and communicating with scientists and engineers at other international facilities and conferences.
- Co-ordinating relationships with suppliers to procure and deliver services, equipment or expertise.
- Collaborating with the other groups to identify areas of research that would help to further improve diagnostics systems.
About You
Suitable candidates should be qualified to degree level in Physics or Engineering, or demonstrate significant equivalent experience, with a relevant post graduate qualification desirable.
All candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience of experimental techniques, data analysis, RF systems and electronics development. Knowledge and experience in beam diagnostics is beneficial.
You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays and 2 annual volunteering days, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
To Apply
Applicants are required to outline their suitability for this role via the online application process. Please also state where you saw this role advertised.
The closing date for applications is 3rd December 2023, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
