Overview of role
- To carry out operation and control of the LU electrical and air distribution systems to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electrical supplies to the Underground Network.
- To provide operational support to LU’s third party contractors and stakeholders working on the power network.
Key Accountabilities
- Carry out the switching of the LU electrical distribution system, to provide safe, reliable, and efficient electrical supplies to LU’s traction, signalling, escalator, compressed air and lighting networks.
- Monitor work being undertaken on site and administer low voltage safety critical paperwork to staff working within Substations, Switch Houses and Transformer Rooms.
- Provide an operational interface with LU Network Operations, to monitor and deal with faults, incidents and emergencies involving Power Supply assets on a 24-hour continuous basis.
- Provide clear and detailed reports of events that occurred in your area of responsibility whilst on duty.
- Provide a clear auditable record of faults, incidents and emergencies involving Power Supply assets, detailing immediate remedial action taken where applicable.
- Support the planning of maintenance and installation work on the LU electrical distribution system, ensuring safe systems of work are employed when reviewing the relevant Method Statements when required to release plant for works within our Substations, Switch Houses, Transformer Rooms and Bulk Supply Points.
- Provide information for fact finding inquiries and help prepare written reports on operational matters.
- Carry out Operational Work Instructions.
- Manage the safe and efficient switch off of traction supplies at the end of Traffic Hours. Participate in the formal training and coaching of new PCR recruits when required.
- Demonstrate excellent verbal communication skills when conveying Safety Critical Messages, which are a key requirement within the operational requirement.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
The post holder must possess a professional qualification in Electrical Engineering, to at least BTEC (ONC) level and, or, have significant experience in a comparable engineering environment.
The post holder must successfully complete the Control Room Operators training course and pass a practical test against the control room’s NVQ assessment criteria.
The post holder must obtain a Safety Critical License to operate LU's electrical control system.
Must have knowledge of:
- Power distribution systems.
- Distribution and Railway Traction Substation plant and equipment.
- Power control systems.
