SSEN Distribution's Large Capital Delivery Design Team is looking for a Lead Engineering Manager - Submarine Cable and Capex to help drive forward our projects. These consist of a diverse portfolio of Subsea Cable projects, Capex, and Customer Connections. We are looking for someone who can bring big ideas, new skills and innovative thinking to help us grow our teams to successfully deliver a network for Net Zero.
What is the Role?
You will be responsible for a team of design engineers, taking projects from an initial high-level scope through to detailed installation/costing design using a suite of engineering standards, following approved governance models, employing various procurement methods, and working with other stakeholders as necessary to deliver the projects into delivery stage, primarily for our Subsea Cable assets and our ED2 Capex works (up to 132kV in England, and up to 33kV in Scotland). This includes assisting with Subsea cable procurement, Long Lead plant ordering, Cable routing, Substation Design, Contractor and ICP Design Reviews, and assisting in FEED activities as required for network refurbishment/reinforcement and network alteration schemes. Based on a business need, you may also support or work on other work streams as required.
You will work as part of a team to provide value engineered designs requiring you to liaise with Internal and External customers, Project Services, and Delivery Partners/Contractors to achieve a fit for purpose design, and develop advanced ordering requirements through plant and installation specifications, and contributing to tendering and tender evaluation across the portfolio.
The role will require you to plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate the health and safety as required in the project's pre-construction phase to ensure the network is constructed robustly and cost effectively whilst eliminating health, safety and financial risks during an asset's lifecycle.
We encourage candidates with a strong multi-discipline engineering and project management experience in client, contractor or consultancy organisations within the construction industry to apply. To succeed in this role your duties would be;
- Drive delivery of engineering work and outputs in line with SSE's governance process across the areas of responsibility, through effective training and mentoring.
- Lead and manage the portfolio (typical value £350m) at the project level, ensuring resource capacity reflects needs, and outputs are on time and to high quality using or developing relevant KPI's.
- Manage risk (technical, quality, cost, health, and safety) across the portfolio. This includes risk identification, assessment, mitigation, communication and record keeping, measurable against KPI's.
- As a design manager, promote the safety-in-design ethos and discharge these CDM duties on behalf of SSE.
- Support and collaborate with project delivery management ensuring technical requirements, risks and issues are clearly defined, communicated, and understood.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- BEng/MEng qualification in appropriate engineering discipline, ideally Chartered or working towards this.
- Experience in a senior engineering or a leadership role overseeing a multi-disciplined team, or owning the project design lifecycle of significant projects (>£10m).
- Experience in large capital construction projects and proficient understanding in EPCI and/or FIDIC contracts (NEC3 also desirable), with experience or knowledge in subsea cable procurement.
- Strong literary and interpersonal communication skills, particularly explaining complex technical issues and relaying recommendations to senior management in a clear and concise fashion.
- Knowledge of, or an understanding of electricity distribution or transmission networks and the legal/regulatory constraints within which SSEN Distribution operates (e.g. ESQCR, CDM).
