Job Details

AWE has great opportunities for CAE Material Model Engineers

These are exciting opportunities for passionate CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) Material Model Engineers to lead the development of advanced, non-linear material models and to integrate them into the finite element analysis codes used by the team. As well as developing material models, these roles will involve liaising with material characterisation teams to obtain mechanical test data and using numerical optimisation techniques to calibrate models to test. You will also be expected to lead the design and development of a database of material models using Granta MI and to deploy it for use by modelling teams.

The Engineering Analysis Team support AWE's mission by providing a range of computational mechanics to the business, such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermal and blast analysis. The team work on challenging, weapons-related projects which underpin continuous-at-sea-deterrence and contribute to the security of the nation.

Location: Aldermaston, West Berkshire. We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking.

Salary: £36,000 - £65,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

Closing date: 10th June 2024

Who Are We Looking For

A degree-level background in a STEM subject is desirable. The Engineering Analysis Team has a diverse set of skills and, as such, we welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate some level of knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Theoretical background in structural analysis and solid mechanics

  • Theoretical background in material behaviours such as viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity and damage

  • Experience with computer code development and working knowledge of C++ and/or Fortran

  • Familiarity with numerical algorithms and techniques applicable to the finite element method and constitutive model implementation

  • Experience in the development of constitutive models for implicit and explicit finite element modelling codes

  • Experience with Python scripting and automation for model pre-/post-processing and workflow efficiency

  • Knowledge of the experimental techniques used for material characterisation and experience with diagnostic techniques such as digital image correlation (DIC)

  • Knowledge and experience of calibrating material models to experimental test data using numerical optimisation methods

  • Familiarity with ANSYS Granta MI and design of database schemas would be highly desirable

  • Familiarity with ANSYS optiSlang would be highly desirable
