Do you enjoy working at all levels of research and development, from blue sky thinking through to implementing results on the international stage?

Would you like to enhance your reputation working with a team of highly respected experts on cutting-edge technology that makes a real difference to keeping all safe at sea?

Do you have expertise in radionavigation or digital system design that you could apply to the technically stimulating challenge of maritime applications?

If so, one of these jobs could be for you.

The GLA Research and Development team (GRAD) support the development of new and emerging marine aids-to-navigation technologies around the coastlines of the UK and Ireland.  The team is world renowned and trusted for its expertise, which is used to develop novel ideas from cradle to grave, through system development, trials and ultimately working to secure international standardisation.

This small team is seeking two new principal engineers, one to lead our radionavigation team and one to lead the digital services team:

  • The radionavigation team delivers our resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) work, supporting the development of non-GNSS PNT systems, maritime integrity solutions, and how these solutions can be used together.  Knowledge and experience of navigation systems, such as GNSS and terrestrial PNT, and how they can be applied within the maritime context is desirable.
  • The digital services team delivers our future maritime digitalisation services, including the design of innovative e-Navigation software, dynamically using data with AI, ensuring resilient and secure connectivity, and managing data exchange to support autonomous vessels.  Experience of working on relevant technologies in these areas is desired, particularly in a maritime context.

Principals have responsibility for the delivery of their project portfolio, including managing budgets and the strategy for that area.  They also provide technical leadership to the team, with active contribution to the technical project aspects, which can include leading on developing international standards whilst having plenty of opportunities to test technology in exciting locations in the field.  Both roles support the wider strategic aims to enhance maritime safety and sustainability, and each role will have routine engagement with stakeholders across the UK and Ireland, and further internationally via IALA, IMO and other standards bodies.

We are looking for engineers with a degree in an engineering, science, or a related subject, and/or significant practical experience.  A good understanding of the technology area for the role, along with experience and professional qualifications of people and project management is also desirable.

While these posts will ideally be located with the GRAD team in Harwich, the option exists for them to be remote with regular trips to Harwich (e.g. once a month).  We offer flexible working arrangements, and both roles will require some national and international travel.

If you would like to discuss these roles, even if you don’t tick all the boxes, please contact the head of the department – Dr Alan Grant, on grad.recruitment@gla-rad.org for an informal chat.  For more about who we are and what we do, please visit the GRAD website at www.gla-rad.org

If you are interested in applying for this position, please send your cv along with a supporting statement to: people.services@trinityhouse.co.uk

We reserve the right to close the vacancy early should a successful candidate be appointed; therefore, early submission of your application is encouraged. Interviews will be held as and when candidates are successfully shortlisted.

We are committed to equity within a respectful, diverse and inclusive environment.
