AWE is looking for talented engineers with a strong background in Control and Instrumentation (C&I) design, to join our Engineering Delivery Team in Capital Engineering.

Location: Reading

Salary: £37,860 - £48,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

The Capital Engineering Delivery team undertakes engineering assessment and design work in support of several key portfolios:

  • Nuclear Risk Management - ensuring that the engineering assets supporting our safety cases are suitable and sufficient to protect our people and the public,

  • Design assessment of existing assets and identification of areas for improvement,

  • Engineering design for new assets and infrastructure, or for modification of existing installations.

As a C&I Design Engineer you will be responsible for undertaking design activities either independently or as part of a team, and for engaging across disciplines to ensure a joined up approach.

Key responsibilities

  • Delivery of engineering and design tasks within assigned areas of responsibility

  • Interfacing with other disciplines, both technical and non-technical

  • Providing engineering support, mentorship, advice and guidance where needed

  • Estimating and planning engineering tasks

  • Ensuring that the design intent and configured baseline are maintained throughout the facility lifecycle

Key Skills, Qualifications & Experience for the role include:

  • An appropriate qualification in a relevant engineering discipline HNC/HND, having completed a recognised Apprenticeship

  • Member of a professional association - preferably but not essentially, working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) accreditation

  • Demonstrable experience of working as a Control and Instrumentation (C&I) Design Engineer with, for example, an understanding of the principles and applications of:

    • Control Panel Design

    • Instrumentation selection and installation (Level, Temperature, Pressure, Flow, Strain),

    • Cable selection and installation

    • PLC and SCADA systems (Analogue and Digital IO and Software)

    • PID Controllers and Drives

    • Maintenance

    • Commissioning and Test (FAT, SAT).

Additionally, experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Functional Safety (IEC 61508 and IEC 61511)

  • Explosive atmospheres - Electrical installations design, selection and erection (IEC 60079-14: 2014), including Intrinsically Safe Concepts

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) (IEC 61000

  • Fire detection and alarm systems (IEC 60839-5-1:2014)

  • CE/UKCA Marking

  • AWE systems and processes

  • Self-motivation, technical knowledge and a desire for self-development are important attributes for this position

  • Understanding of relevant codes and design standards for areas of experience

  • An understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSAWA), Construction Design Management (CDM), risk assessments

  • An understanding of Safety Cases or working in a highly regulated (e.g. Nuclear, Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas) industry would be beneficial

  • Good written, verbal and presentation skills - proficient in Microsoft's suite desktop applications.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
