AWE is looking for talented engineers with a strong background in Electrical design, to join our Engineering Delivery Team in Capital Engineering.
Location: Reading
Salary: £37,860 - £48,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

The Capital Engineering Delivery team undertakes engineering assessment and design work in support of several key portfolios:
- Nuclear Risk Management - ensuring that the engineering assets supporting our safety cases are suitable and sufficient to protect our people and the public
- Design assessment of existing assets and identification of areas for improvement
- Engineering design for new assets and infrastructure, or for modification of existing installations
As an Electrical Design Engineer you will be responsible for undertaking design activities, either independently or as part of a team, and for engaging across disciplines to ensure a joined up approach. This role is within the AWE's Electrical Technical Authority.
Key responsibilities
- Delivery of engineering and design tasks within assigned areas of responsibility
- Interfacing with other disciplines, both technical and non-technical
- Providing engineering support, mentorship, advice and guidance where needed
- Estimating and planning engineering tasks
- Ensuring that the design intent and configured baseline are maintained throughout the facility lifecycle
What skills and qualifications are needed?
- An appropriate qualification in a relevant engineering discipline HNC/HND, having completed a recognised and appropriate Apprenticeship
- Member of a professional association - preferably but not essentially, on the path to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status
- A demonstrable experience of working as an Electrical Engineer in Low Voltage (LV) (400V) Electrical distribution design, maintenance and test to the requirements of the IET Wiring Regulations BS7671
Additionally, experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Lightning protection design for explosive atmospheres
- Fire detection and alarm systems (IEC 60839-5-1:2014)
- HV distribution system design, maintenance and test
- Explosive atmospheres - Electrical installations design, selection and erection (IEC 60079-14: 2014), including Intrinsically Safe Concepts
- Functional Safety (IEC 61508 and IEC 61511)
- AWE systems and processes
- Self-motivation, technical knowledge and a desire for self-development are important attributes for this position
- Understanding of relevant codes and design standards for areas of experience
- An understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSAWA), Construction Design Management (CDM), risk assessments
- An understanding of Safety Cases or working in a highly regulated (e.g. Nuclear, Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas) industry would be beneficial
- Good written, verbal and presentation skills - proficient in working with Microsoft's suite of IT applications
Candidates must be willing to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role
