About Us
The Hartree Centre is within the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and part of UK Research and Innovation. We are funded by UK Government to support businesses and the public sector on their digital journey, so we can grow the economy, create skilled jobs and keep the UK at the forefront of digital innovation.
We help organisations with an appetite for change, who are ready to innovate and create useful solutions, to explore and adopt advanced digital technologies, including high performance computing (HPC), data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). We are home to some of the most advanced computing, data and AI technologies in the UK and form an important part of the UK's research and innovation ecosystem alongside our global network of academic research communities and technology partners.
Benefits
STFC values their employees by offering a benefits package designed to provide an excellent work/life balance. This includes 30 days’ annual leave, 10.5 public and privilege holidays, flexible working hours, exceptional average salary pension scheme, social and sporting activities and societies and a subsidised restaurant.
The Role
The continuing success of the Hartree Centre means we are looking to recruit hardworking and enthusiastic Software Engineers to work on ground-breaking projects across high performance computing, big data analytics, and AI. The successful candidate will be working with the latest architectures and technologies to meet the needs of UK industry, with a particular focus on the development of stochastic methods and associated software for exploiting high performance computer systems.
If successful, you will join a well-established and expanding team of extraordinary Software Engineers and Computational Scientists focussing on high-performance computing within our Centre, with an expanding IBM research team at STFC. You will work with business development personnel to develop collaborations with industrial partners and public agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Building computational models of components, products and processes.
- Help commercial partners understand how to model uncertainties using and adopt complex models, especially multilevel, multi-scale stochastic and hybrid ones.
- Support our partners integrate hierarchical and multilevel modelling approaches that enable efficient integration of novel methods in their applications.
- Working with Business Development on project scoping, in particular, identifying appropriate objectives to address client challenges, and feasibility assessment of technologies required to meet objectives and support our business development managers with technical pre-sales.
- Learn and apply HPC, data centric, analytics and AI technologies to enable our customers to tackle new challenges.
- Look at validation of conclusions, and presentation of results to customers (including advanced visualisation).
- Contributing and writing project applications for funding from national and international competitions.
- Project management across a range of project sizes and types, typically involving members from multiple groups within Hartree (including Research Software Engineering, HPC, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science).
- Make site visits to commercial and academic partners.
- Publish non-confidential results.

- PhD or equivalent professional experience in at least two areas with relevance to extreme-scale computing, mathematics, in particular, stochastic methods and algorithms , Computational Science and engineering.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience using modelling and simulation to give insight into the behaviour of physical systems via the use of stochastic (MCMC, SMC, MLMC) and hybrid methods, including building large and complex modelling software with dependencies.
- Knowledge of HPC: performance profiling and development of parallel software (both shared- and distributed-memory) with a compiled language such as C/C++ or Fortran.
- Can work as part of a team and independently.
- Able to work with a range of clients and have an interest in technical pre-scales..
- Experience in at least one of the following: Large scale, distributed-memory algorithms; Development of methods for large-scale solution of linear algebra or numerical optimisation problems; Heterogenous/accelerated computing; Modelling uncertainty quantification.
