We have an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer to join our Connections team to produce designs and quotations for customers with electricity connections to our network. The role will be focussed on both demand and generation applications for 1MVA and above and will require knowledge of both HV and EHV connections from 6.6kV up to and including 132kV. The ideal candidate would have experience at 33kV and 132kV but we would be willing to consider candidates with strong experience 6.6/11kV who are looking to upskill to EHV.

As a Design Engineer you will be required to have a high level of technical expertise, skills and knowledge to produce high quality design and quotations for new and modified connections whilst providing excellent customer service. In addition to this you will need to demonstrate the ability to manage workloads to meet regulatory standards and customer expectations, adapt to business changes and identify the training needs of less experienced colleagues to deliver or arrange training.  You will ensure designs are safe and minimum cost solutions in accordance with Electricity North West Licence Conditions, Common Connections Charging Methodology and Electricity North West Policy and Standards of compliance.

You will need to be familiar with new Low Carbon technologies that are connecting to the Distribution Network such as Electric Vehicle chargers, heat pumps, battery technology and solar. 

You will be required to have a good working knowledge of ENA ER G5, G98 and G99 and have experience of designing generation systems.  You will also be responsible for adhering to Ofgem’s standards, data integrity and provide accurate forecasts of information for the range of projects under your control. You will need to be results focused to ensure the exceptional customer service provided is converted into accepted quotations to sustain a healthy order book to achieve your acceptance targets.

To be considered you will;

  • Hold a minimum of an HNC level qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (essential).
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of 6.6kV / 11kV systems and substations, including switchgear, transformers, overhead, underground circuits and protection (essential)
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of 33kV and 132kV systems and substations, including switchgear, transformers, overhead, underground circuits and protection (desirable)
  • Have experience with electrical engineering design and practices and have an in-depth knowledge of the electricity distribution business, including an understanding of regulatory and industry standards within electricity distribution.
  • Have a sound technical knowledge of electrical network components, network operation, operational policy, design standards and specifications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Construction Design Management regulations relating to utility projects.
  • Demonstrate sound leadership and motivational skills with the ability to work in a team and help others in your team to improve.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge / understanding of the competition in the connections market.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own personal service and getting things done.
  • Have excellent customer service skills both face to face and by telephone.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Be highly driven and self-motivated.
  • Possess excellent organisation and personal time management.
  • Be able to build long lasting stakeholder relationships.
  • Have excellent IT skills, in particular MS Office.
