Let us introduce the role:

The Group Leader Engineering (Delivery) is tasked by the Head of Engineering Delivery in their respective Delivery Unit. This is applicable to Technology Centres, Projects and Programmes. They are the Engineering Leader and Decision maker, coordinator for all aspects of engineering (Capital, Warhead and Production & Assets), task manager to engineers within their area of delivery, the first point of escalation and the Function's interface for engineering resource.

The Group Leader Engineering (Delivery) is accountable for delivery, performance and quality within their area and implementing the overall engineering strategy, as applicable to their boundary.

As part of this role, the Delegated Design Authority (SQEP position) is responsible for technical guidance and coordination of US interactions for Astraea.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Key member of the Delivery Unit Leadership Team in establishing and delivering a holistic strategy including the supply chain that improves efficiency, effectiveness and quality to ensure fit for purpose engineering solutions are deployed

  • Ensuring effective input from Capital, Warhead and Production & Assets Engineering as the One Controlling Mind

  • Leadership of the engineering activities and governance across the Delivery Unit portfolio to time, quality and cost

  • Delegation of Authority to engineers within the Delivery Unit to the most appropriate level, following the process and standard defined by the Chief Engineer (within the limitations of their delegation from the Head of Engineering Delivery / Design Authority)

  • Lead on resolution of Regulatory Issues on behalf of the Head of Engineering Delivery and the Chief Engineer

  • Work with Head of Engineering Delivery to ensure the engineering demand plan for the delivery unit is realistic and deliverable

  • Accountable for the task management and performance management of embedded engineers and providing input and support to the Head of Sub Function for areas such as recruitment and training

  • Identify appropriate resources and where they need to be allocated to deliver engineering solutions, working with the Engineering Sub Function to ensure that this is effective

DDA US Interactions:

  • Lead on elements of US interactions for Astraea projects and be part of the technical delivery project team

  • Coordinate across all DDAs to ensure consistency of message for all US interactions

  • Lead (develop, maintain and realise) the US technical engagement strategy for Astraea including proposals to DNO for additional channels in line with the strategy and plan

  • Drive improvements to enable UK/US processes (i.e., US compatibility MDA, PSA, Technical Arrangements, data exchange and working arrangements) on behalf of the DDAs and programme

  • Manage and coordinate all Astraea US data (both incoming and outgoing)

  • Work across the Astraea programme to collate and rationalise all technical data requests and identify appropriate channels; and the reciprocal of communicating technical data across the programme

  • Collate, prioritise and maintain with the DDAs, the Information Sharing Approach list of requested US documentation

  • Derive and deliver the technical concurrent engineering approach with the US on behalf of the DDAs and programme

  • Coordinate and configure the requirements from DDAs and manage the hand off tracker, working with DDA (SE&I) to agree prioritisation of key deliverables

  • Integrate with the UK / US forums and AWE International Liaison Office (ILO) to ensure data flow is being managed appropriately and proportionally

  • Manage all technical data requests through the Official Request Form (ORF) process

  • Support submissions to AWE, DNO & committees as required

  • Provide clarity (where required) on UK transmissions within the US where requested by DNO or other DDAs

  • Deliver the RW strategy for engagement with the US and enact the plan with programme accordingly

  • Working across all DDAs, delivery of the US GFx needs to DNO and support accordingly

Key Skills, Qualifications, Experience, for the role:

  • Degree in STEM discipline, equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent experience

  • Chartered professional status in an appropriate professional institution (Desirable)

  • Proven track record of driving delivery, continuous improvement and sustained performance focusing on the engineering strategy, technical direction and overall capability including people, process & technology

  • Experience of managing high performing and multidisciplinary technical teams and programmes both within engineering and across the business

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and organisational skills

  • Ability to people through transformation and change

  • Lead by example with regards to positive behaviours and safety culture

  • External collaboration and raising the profile of the Company

Important things you need to know:

  • You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years in order to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.

  • All candidates must be willing, if able, to undertake UK and overseas travel as required

  • Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.
