Dstl is responsible for designing, developing and applying the very latest in science and technology for the benefit of UK defence and security, across government. We work with the best people with the best ideas around the world – from very small companies to world-class universities, huge defence companies and sometimes other nations.

If you have a background in Communications, DSP, RF or similar, we’ve got an exciting role for you. As part of our Cyber & Electronic Effects (CEE) Group, you’ll be working on some of the latest areas of technology. The Group supports UK defence through a variety of research. This ranges from direct support for Front Line Commands to deep low Technology Readiness Level research for Electronic Warfare (EW) and cyber projects. In short, you can have a significant impact on national security and operations.   

Your main task will be to develop DSP algorithms and software, and to improve interfaces with third party sensors. The majority of your work will take place in the lab. However, you’ll also help with trials on military ranges both in the UK and abroad. Whatever the task, you’ll be expected to work with minimum supervision.

We currently have opportunities at a number of different levels. Senior roles may involve planning and directing research. All Engineer / Scientists will be working on and influencing £multi-million programmes and procurement projects.

To join us, your knowledge must cover:

  • DSP
  • RF Communications research or design
  • RF Comms data link technologies (such as 3/4/5G and WLAN)
  • RF testing and measurement
  • A programming language such as Matlab, C, C++ or Python.

These technical talents should come with a 2:1 degree (minimum) in Electronic Engineering. We’ll also accept degrees in Mathematics, Physics and relevant Science and Engineering disciplines. Those with equivalent experience will be considered too.     

Above all, you need the creativity to solve problems and deliver novel solutions. You’ll be open to new ideas and always willing to learn. Naturally collaborative, you’ll be good in a team, working either as a leader or a team member.
