About The Role

An opportunity for a Group Leader has arisen within the Detector Systems Group. Sensors and instrumentation technologies are crucial to every field of science and the DSG provides instrumentation and detector systems in support of the STFC programme. The DSG provides support projects from proof-of-principle, feasibility demonstration to a fully engineered prototype. The group has all the key capabilities, including laboratories and equipment, to follow each step of a project process from conception, through to installation and operational support, to successfully enable science or commercial activities.

The Group Leader will be expected to develop the future work programme of the Group and provide technical leadership is several areas of the group’s activities. You will define the overall strategy of the DSG, including working with other STFC staff to identify and secure new opportunities for projects and funding and providing the day to day Group management for a team comprising a mix of engineers, technical staff and scientists. You will be expected to provide technical leadership in one or more areas of detectors and instrumentation development.

About You

You will hold a bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering or Physics or equivalent experience which has been recognised by award of chartered status.

You will have experience of budget and project management, as well as technical experience in one or more of the following;

  • analogue electronics design
  • digital electronics design for high speed systems
  • FPGA expertise
  • detector systems for scientific applications.

As the group leader it’s important you have experience managing, developing and motivating a large team.

Strong interpersonal skills are key as the role involves a high level of networking with a wide range of stakeholders and colleagues.
