Instrumentation and Control Systems Technician in the Health, Safety & Environment Unit (HSE), Radiation Protection Group (RP), Instrumentation and Logistics Section (IL).

You will join the Radiation Protection (RP) group within the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, which acts, on behalf of the Director General, on general safety matters, radiation and environmental protection. The RP Group ensures that personnel on the CERN sites and the public are protected from the potentially harmful effects of ionising radiation linked to CERN's activities, ensuring that exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. The duties of CERN's Radiation Protection Group include the legally required monitoring of ionising radiation at workplaces and in the environment.

Within the RP Group, the Instrumentation & Logitics (IL) Section is responsible for the procurement, installation, commissioning and maintenance of portable and fixed radiation monitoring instrumentation as well as their associated control systems for the whole of CERN's accelerators, experimental facilities and the environment. The IL Section is also responsible for designing and developing specialised equipment for radiation protection.

Functions

As an Instrumentation and Control Systems Technician in the IL Section, you will be part of the radiation protection maintenance and operations team. You will:

  • Plan, organise and supervise the work needed to install and commission equipment for the radiation monitoring systems for the accelerators and experimental areas.
  • Take part in the operation of existing systems, carry out preventive and corrective maintenance and make improvements if required.
  • Plan, procure and manage spares and repairs.
  • Establish procedures for installation, maintenance and operation, document and report to managers and users.
  • Implement and use maintenance management tools.
  • Analyse needs from the RP operations team and contribute to the implementation of monitoring systems.
  • Interact with operation and facility co-ordinators and participate in shutdown planning.


Qualification required

Higher technical diploma in the field of Instrumentation, Control systems or Electromechanical engineering, or equivalent.


The experience required for this position is:

  • Proven experience in large scale distributed instrumentation control systems.
  • Proven experience in installation and commissioning.
  • Proven experience in maintenance and operations.
  • Previous experience with PLC and fieldbus.
  • Initial knowledge of radiation protection and use of radioactive sources would be an advantage.


The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Installation, maintenance & operation of Control systems.
  • Commissioning & maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Configuration and programming of PLC and fieldbus system / Programming of PLCs.
  • Use of Office software packages; knowledge of sharepoint and ms project would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of measurement techniques for ionising radiation would be an advantage.
The language competencies required are:


  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to draw up technical texts in one of the two languages, a willingness to acquire a working knowledge of the other language.

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.

  • Require interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence is required.
  • Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
