Due to continued growth we are looking for a Project Design Engineer to join our Strategic Investment Design Team based in our prestigious new premises in Reading, One Forbury Place, conveniently located in Reading town centre. This new location offers new flexibility in the way we work, and with this in mind, this role can be carried out splitting time between the office and either your home or another SSEN location.

The Strategic Investment Design team carry out the design work for new electricity connections, increasing the size of customers existing connections, installing generation, and moving equipment for third parties. We’re here to help whether our customers who are carrying out industrial development, generation development or independent distribution network. Our responsibility is to respond to challenging changes in our licence obligations, and growing levels of competition.

As a Project Design Engineer, you will be responsible for managing a project from initial high level scope, through detailed design and costing to a full pre-construction file. This includes site layouts / line route designs, stage by stage plans, plant and installation specifications, tendering and tender evaluation. You will lead a team to develop these value engineered designs in a timely, cost effective, safe and efficient manor.

You will have experience in design and specification of sub-station and overhead Line schemes up to either 33kV or 132kV. A minimum HNC in a relevant subject is preferred, in addition to experience in this field with a DNO or a supplier to the industry. A knowledge of Project Management methodology would be advantageous.

You will have good communication skills and have previous experience in applying the Construction Design, and Management Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects, and fulfil 'Principal Designer' duties. You will be required to work to tight timescales, and provide first class customer service; therefore the ability to thrive under pressure is essential. It is also important that you have an eye on long term development, and are able to identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.
