If the opportunity to provide technical expertise and direction in areas ranging from electrification system asset management to electrical safety improvement initiatives sounds like just the kind of challenge you crave, make the move to Network Rail.

Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain’s railway – the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts, and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which we also run). In partnership with train operators we help people take more than 1.6bn journeys by rail every year - double the number of 1996 - and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. We are also the largest energy distributor in the UK, using over 3500GWh every year with an annual bill of over £350million.

Our Safety, Technical & Engineering (STE) Group are the people that provide a ‘Centre of Expertise' that will ensure we deliver high quality safety, technical and engineering leadership to the business. You too could soon be playing your part.

The electrification part of STE is made up of the Power Distribution, Contact Systems and Power Systems teams. In addition to acting as the ‘Technical Authority’, through the setting of asset management and system design strategy, policy and standards, they provide the technical leadership to  strategic programmes such as National SCADA Renewal and Electrical Safety Delivery (ESD), the aim of which is to improve compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations (EaWR) 1989 and deliver a step change in the way we manage electrical safety. We’re looking for engineers at all levels across each team, so get ready for plenty of challenges ahead. It's not just your expert advice, input and support on electrification matters provided to all parts of the business that we’ll be relying on.

You’ll also provide professional leadership and mentor the engineers aligned to your particular discipline. Supporting the route businesses with technical investigations will be important too, as will leading the engineering acceptance of products and materials, addressing internal and external recommendations and audit actions and carrying out strategic reviews of power supply upgrade proposals and assessments of existing supply capacity. Managing engineering verification activities, identifying opportunities for technical and business improvement and innovation and developing business cases and investment papers – all are aspects of this business critical role.
