The Opportunity
MBDA has entered the next phase of its exciting evolution as a world class and dominant European missile company. The growing workload within MBDA has created exciting opportunities within the Software Function for Principal Software Engineers to lead, or become integral members of, this multi-disciplined team.
The Test Systems team is tasked with supplying a full range of test solutions, from overall Missile test to Board test plus Simulators and Field Support equipment.  This is a unique and exciting opportunity to develop technical and leadership skills across our broad range of products.
We are looking for a highly capable Software Design and Development Engineer for an exciting opportunity within our Test Systems team. The team is multi-disciplined including mechanical and electronic design engineers working with software development engineers and others from business related disciplines.
This is a senior role enabling you to improve and apply your technical skills across our range of test solutions responding to the functionality and performance requirements associated with testing our complex products.
The Role
The Test Systems team is tasked with supplying a full range of test equipment solutions used in product development, production pass-out and in-service testing. The test equipment is highly reliant on software for providing the functionality for the range of use cases. The role lies within the Real Time and Test Software department in the UK which operates within the international Embedded Software organisation of the multi‑national Software Function.
In this role you will be:
  • Designing high quality software solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Implementing the designs, and seeing them through to delivery to a demanding customer either within production or other design teams.
  • Performing integration activities where test equipment hardware, software and the unit under test, come together for the first time.
  • Identifying the cause of problems, resolving performance issues and implementing software modifications as necessary or recommending other remedial actions when required.
    What’s in it for you?
  • This is a great role for an enthusiastic individual looking to improve their engineering skills.
  • You will be working with teams in both the UK and wider international Software Engineering organisation, ultimately supporting the development of safe, secure and reliable products that our customers can rely on. Consequently there may be the opportunity to travel both within the UK and to our sites in France and Italy.
  • We offer a supportive working environment with the opportunity to develop your skills at an exciting time for Software Engineering and in addition provide significant mobility opportunities within software or the wider business.
    What’s great about the team?
  • The UK Test Systems team is a multi-disciplined dynamic, focused and agile team of about 100 engineers specialising in all aspects of Test Solution design, including hardware, software and embedded real-time systems.  These skills are co-located providing an atmosphere of supportive cooperation and interdependence whose strengths are well placed to face the challenges of the future.
  • The Embedded Software department develops software critical to the production of some of the most advanced missile systems in the world. The department applies small, focused teams of engineers to complex problems, contributing to a talented group of experienced software, systems and electronics engineers developing very interesting, technically advanced products.
    What are we looking for?
Ideally, we are looking for an experienced Software Engineer with a background in the development of Test Equipment solutions. Applicants with significant software engineering experience within another domain will also be considered for development into the role.
  • Strong ability to write software using either:
    • C with experience of LabWindows/CVI and TestStand desirable.
    • C++ / C# using Microsoft Visual Studio.
    • Similar industry standard procedural programming language.
  • < >-starter, strong sense of ownership, get things done. Fun, positive attitude, great communication skills and a healthy desire for collaboration.
  • Expertise in Electronics test measurement techniques with the ability to provide automated control of general purpose test instrumentation.
  • Really good system integration skills and a keen ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.
    Other desirable qualities are:
  • Knowledge of Software configuration management tools and techniques.
  • Understanding of standard communications and test equipment interfaces.
  • Experience of developing real time software (e.g. using IntervalZero RTX).
  • Ability to influence product test strategy.
    What would you get?
  • Competitive salaries, flexible working, paid overtime (subject to level), a comprehensive pension scheme, employee funded voluntary private healthcare, sporting activities, fantastic site facilities, bonus schemes (subject to level) and superb learning and development opportunities.
