Who we are

Welcome to HMGCC, Her Majesty's Government Communications Centre. Where the most highly innovative and complex communication systems used by the British Government are brought to life. It’s manufacturing like you’ve never known it before. Ours is a world of pioneering products, custom one-offs and very special builds, so there’s always a new challenge to test your skills and keep your mind fresh. Add to that our brand new, state-of-the-art facility and the chance to safeguard our nation; it’s the perfect place to hone your expertise.

What you’ll do

What makes us different is that you’ll get involved in the whole process. You’ll use your skills and experience to create a diverse range of components while working with a variety of customers and like-minded engineers. Best of all, we’ll give you the freedom to decide how you want to get the work done, as long as you can deliver. You’ll also:

  • Design and manufacture bespoke high quality components within challenging and demanding timescales, working from either engineering drawings or verbal instructions
  • Work closely with customers and onsite engineers to provide creative manufacturing solutions
  • Use your initiative to decide how you’ll finish a product, while working through all manufacturing stages as required; including the design and manufacture of tooling aids
  • Take pride in your work and adhere to our procedures, policies and responsibilities including Health and Safety best practice
  • Be willing to work (paid) overtime when required.

What you’ll need

  • In depth knowledge and experience of Plastics Prototyping and manufacturing techniques.
  • Proven hand skills through experience in Model Making, Vacuum Casting or similar craft techniques.
  • An understanding of adhesive types and joint properties.
  • A recognised engineering apprenticeship or relevant experience.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Good computer and communication skills.
  • The ability and desire to spot and make improvements.
  • A passion for getting stuck into challenges and problem solving.
  • Confidence in your ability to get the job done, even under pressure.

The Senior Plastic Prototyping Engineer will also need:

  • Knowledge and experience of Vacuum Forming, Injection Mould tool setting and processing, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), CNC Routing and Rapid Prototyping.
  • Understanding of 3D printing and processes involved in reverse engineering.
  • Experience with CAD, preferably Visi, ProEngineer or Geomagics.
  • Experience in a supervisory role would be desirable.

If you’re interested in the Senior Prototyping Engineer position but feel a leadership role is not for you, we would still like to hear from you.
