RF systems provide power, control and measurement to a wide range of industrial, medical, scientific, aerospace and defence applications. Core to these requirements is the stability and reliability of the RF Power system and the technical knowledge enabling providers to work with system designers to develop product and sub-systems to meet their ever more complex needs.

Overview of Role

You will provide technical leadership on strategic systems development programmes in the RF Power Division from pre-bid development of the opportunity through to execution and beyond, working within an integrated project team as 'Design Lead' for sub-system elements or as 'Technical Authority' for the project.

You will work closely with customers and suppliers to ensure applications/specifications are understood and requirements are captured, designed in and delivered using sound systems engineering principles. It is also essential that aspects beyond the technical requirements are considered including manufacturability, safety, compliance and cost targets (product and project).

In this role you will be involved with the following:

  • Reviewing customer & stakeholder specifications & requirements.

  • Assess technical feasibility, develop concept designs and prepare technical responses (e.g. white papers, statement of compliance)

  • Verifying the technical quality of our projects and programmes throughout the product lifecycle from bid through to commissioning

  • Adoption of Systems Engineering approach, as required, for effective system partitioning,

  • Reviewing/Authoring specifications at component, subsystem and system level

  • Technical decision making on the project respecting time, cost & quality/scope/performance targets and in full consultation with project manager

  • Leading technical problem solving activities to satisfy customers (internal and external) with fast, accurate and technically competent resolution of major issues throughout the product lifecycle

  • Ensuring regulatory and legislative compliance requirements are understood and flowed to team. Underwriting plans to address these in consultation with quality functions

  • Defining technical content of project schedules, risk and mitigation and skills required in consultation with other design specialists in the team.

  • Authoring /approval of technical documentation for the project

  • Leading the technical progress reviews and providing updates to project/programme manager and/or customer, continually checking expectations

  • Underwriting changes to the product configuration (build standard and testing)

  • Ensuring the team creates, assesses and secures intellectual property within the projects

  • Supporting the BU's with expertise on addressing market needs through exploiting

  • Identifying new opportunities for deployment of existing technology through conferences, journals, visits etc

  • Identifying and evaluating appropriate products to satisfy new business opportunities

  • Providing effective coaching (formal and informal) of engineers, product managers and marketing specialists in own disciplines

To be successful in this role you are likely to have the following:

  • Proven track record in technical leadership of projects to successful completion and directing engineering activity

  • Proven track record in design, specification, selection and systems integration

  • Domain knowledge in the High power microwave systems including specialist knowledge of at least one of the core technologies

  • Antennas, High power microwave systems, sources and components

  • Excellent working knowledge of microwave principles

  • Experience conducting performance evaluation of systems and components including validation against specification or test plan requirements

  • Use of electrical, thermal, microwave test and measurement equipment
