Do you have a technical mind-set and able to manage complex issues? Do you have a background in engineering or science, and want to make a positive difference to the safety and environmental impact of vehicles? Would you like the chance to be a valued technical expert within the Department for Transport (DfT)?

The International Vehicle Standards (IVS) division is offering a unique opportunity for enthusiastic engineers to drive forward the development and delivery of UK government policy for safer, cleaner and quieter road vehicles.

We have a number of positions available in our Vehicle Safety group and Vehicle Environment branch. As an Engineer in IVS, you will be critical to the development and delivery of vehicle standards within DfT, across government and internationally.

Role Responsibilities
• Leading policy development and delivery for vehicle standards, providing specialist advice to DfT Ministers and across government
• Supporting and attending international meetings and conferences, representing the UK’s interests and building relationships
• Driving forward strategic programmes and research projects to deliver the innovation and improvements required for vehicle safety and emissions in the UK and internationally
• Providing technical engineering expertise within IVS and across the DfT for ad-hoc projects, demonstrating flexibility in other technical areas where required
• Providing specialist advice to the IVS correspondence team for responding to enquiries from members of the public, the media and Ministers

About you
You will be responsible for shaping the future standards for vehicles alongside a dedicated team of likeminded Engineers. You will confidently take a leading role in technical policy development and delivery. You are a good communicator, and can effectively exchange information and provide advice to technical and non-technical colleagues. You are technically-minded and able to understand complex problems with limited guidance.

Ideally you should hold a Science or Engineering degree or specific academic/technical qualifications to a similar level. However, if you are unsure whether your qualifications are sufficient, do get in touch.

Your academic qualifications should be enhanced by practical experience in areas such as, but not limited to, design, manufacturing, quality control, homologation, etc.

About Us
The International Vehicle Standards (IVS) division provides the department’s professional engineering expertise, policy leadership and delivery for the introduction and harmonisation of road vehicle standards. We provide ministers with specialist technical advice and lead negotiations and engagement on vehicle standards at United Nations and the European Union technical forums.

Our work cuts across organisational boundaries, with IVS Engineers leading on passive and active crash safety systems, emissions and environmental impact, as well as the frameworks that govern vehicle homologation and approval. We work directly with DfT Agencies including the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and Driver & Vehicle Standards and Licensing Agencies (DVSA and DVLA), other Government departments across Whitehall, the Automotive industry in the UK and abroad, and with international partner nations and member states.

IVS has and will continue to make a real and positive contribution to the development of vehicles across the globe, with successful programmes such as Euro NCAP and the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) originating from this team, as well as our continuing efforts in leading the UK government response to the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Special Requirements
You will occasionally be required to travel overseas.

For your application we are looking to get an understanding of your skills, job history and any qualifications you may hold. The skills section should not duplicate information presented in your CV, but should highlight particularly key points in your career. It should also highlight some of the successes that you have had in previous roles, describing how your contribution was important in achieving the outcome.

Please tailor your CV to reflect the role and the competencies/and indicators described in the job advert.
